??? ? Providing Year-round Programming for the Borough?s 2.2 Million Residents,?Kupferberg is Considered the Major Arts and Culture Center in Queens ?
FLUSHING, N.Y., OCTOBER 12, 2012 ? With events this month and next marking the reopening of six newly renovated Queens College arts venues ? Colden Auditorium, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, Goldstein Theatre, the QC Art Center, LeFrak Concert Hall, and the Godwin-Ternbach Museum ? the Kupferberg Center for the Performing Arts solidifies its position as the major arts and culture center for Queens. The Kupferberg Center provides year-round cultural programming, including music and dance performances, art exhibitions, plays and literary readings for over 21,000 members of the campus community and for the borough?s 2.2 million residents.? Well over 350,000 people attend cultural programs at Queens College, and increasingly at off-site neighborhood venues, each year.
?We?re well on the path of making Kupferberg the best arts and cultural center in the borough,? says QC President James Muyskens.? ?Not only do we expect to draw larger crowds to our improved facilities, but we?ll be expanding our programs to schools, senior centers and throughout the community. This is part of the cultural renaissance we envision for our neighbors in Queens.?
In 2006, alumnus Max Kupferberg and his wife, the late Selma Kupferberg, donated $10 million to Queens College.? This visionary and generous gift was earmarked to support the arts at Queens College, and led to the creation of the Selma and Max Kupferberg Center for the Visual and Performing Arts ? an umbrella organization to unite the multi-faceted arts programs presented by various academic centers and departments on campus.? Much of the Kupferberg donation went toward the extensive renovations that took two years to complete ? including designs and enhancements to the interior lobbies and facades, as well as new landscaping, signage and updated technical, HVAC and security systems.
Last June, a ribbon-cutting attended by Max Kupferberg and his son Saul was held following the renovations of four of the venues. This fall, the college celebrates the reopening of all six arts venues with these kick-off events:
