Indianapolis Colts v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

Titans tight end Jared Cook may want a trade, but that doesn?t mean he?s going to get one.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said he?s not interested in moving Cook, who he sees as part of the team?s plans.

?I am not going to comment on that. That is not my decision to make, but I don?t see that happening, no,? Munchak said, via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. ?I don?t see why we would do that. I don?t follow that. The agent is calling to stir the pot. This is not the time for those things.

?Jared is a big part of our team. Jared has made a lot of great catches for us this year. Jared?s our [third] leading receiver. We know for us to win games we need him making plays for us, so for me it?s not something I?ve thought about at all, so I am hoping it is not on his mind either.?

What may be on his mind, and the mind of his agent, is that he?s entering the final year of his rookie deal, and it?s time to get paid.

But playing time is also a factor, as Cook has been on the field for fewer than 50 percent of the Titans offensive snaps in six of eight games, including two he was limited in because of a shoulder injury.

Munchak said they want to get him more involved, which could help smooth things over.

?We are all frustrated. I am frustrated, too. I hope everyone is frustrated. I hope we all think we can do more, because we all can do more, every one of us, the coaching staff on down. We?re 3-5, and that?s not good enough. And that includes every one of us,? Munchak said. ?Frustration means work your way through it and let?s find a way to turn this around and get to 5-5, that is where the frustration should be used.?

Cook has 28 catches for 373 yards and two touchdowns, a similar pace to last year?s 49-759-3 line. Since the beginning of 2011, only Rob Gronkowski has more receiving yards by a tight end.

Finding triggers of birth defects in an embryo heart

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at Case Western Reserve University have found a way to create three-dimensional maps of the stress that circulating blood places on the developing heart in an animal model -- a key to understanding triggers of heart defects.

The team has begun testing the technology to uncover how alcohol, drugs and other factors set off events that result in defects found in newborn humans.

Passing blood cells drag on the endothelial cells that line the growing heart, a phenomenon called shear stress, which has been linked to changes in gene expression that results in defects, most often in the valves. But precisely how they're connected is unclear.

"Alcohol exposure may affect shear stress by modulating the heart rate, but it may also involve vigor and/or timing of the contraction," said Andrew Rollins, associate professor of biomedical engineering and senior author of the new study. "Now that we have the tool, we can start to figure that out."

"We're analyzing early and late development of the heart and trying to make the connections that result in valve dysfunction," said Lindsy M. Peterson, a PhD student in Rollins' lab and lead author. Their work is published in the current online issue of the Optical Society of America's journal Biomedical Optics Express.

The pair teamed with research assistant professor Michael W. Jenkins; senior research associate Shi Gu; Lee Barwick, an undergraduate researcher now at Brigham Young University; and Michiko Watanabe, a professor of pediatrics at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

To look at the structure of the developing heart and blood flow, the researchers modified a technology called Doppler optical coherence tomography. Called OCT for short, they shine an infrared laser on the heart.

The reflections measured at various depths are used to create a three-dimensional image in much the same manner submariners use sonar to picture their surroundings in the deep sea. But the researchers add the dimension of time, creating movies of blood flow through the structures, needed to map shear stress.

They take their first images at two days, during a stage of heart development called cardiac looping. This is when the simple straight tube that's an embryo heart turns clockwise into a helix, forming the beginnings of two atria and two ventricles. They take more images at three days and again at eight days, when the septum, the wall between the left and right sides of the heart, has formed.

Working with Ganga Karunamuni, a pediatrics research associate at the school of medicine, the team is now pursuing a slate of experiments testing the quail heart model's response to alcohol exposure and will also test exposure to mental health drugs called selective serotonin receptor inhibitors. Alone or together, they can alter shear stress.

They are exposing the model to alcohol at a stage called gastrulation, when the embryo changes from two sheets of cells to a multi-layered organism.

This is a critical stage for induction of birth defects, Peterson said. In humans, it's an early stage when a woman may not know that she is pregnant.

Rollins said clinical applications are a long way off but the team has begun talking about possibilities.

"If it became feasible to screen a fetus for abnormal heart function," he said, "it might be possible to intervene with drugs, with gene therapy." Or, by using non-invasive pulses of infrared light to make the heart contract on demand -- another technology the team is developing with clinical colleagues in Pediatric Cardiology- to prevent or treat defects before birth.

'Argo'. Ben Affleck, take a bow. A magnificent achievement in pacing and tension, bringing an unbelievable true story to life. There's a line towards the beginning, when they're trying to sell The Hollywood Option, that goes something like, "And everybody knows they'd shoot in Stalingrad with Pol Pot directing if it would sell tickets." This cynical undercurrent that still permeates through Hollywood today, arguably more so, grounds this film in a believability that would be hard to artificially create solely for this film. It's one of the many cheeky shots the film takes, having a go at acting, directing and everything in between. Affleck's camera movements are frenetic and clear all at once, swooping, circling and darting rapidly on occasion, most noticeable in the opening hysteria at the embassy. The last twenty or so minutes, where 'Argo' ratchets up the tension, is owed in large to some brilliant editing, switching between the four parties involved, while never needing to cheat the audience in taking them down a false path. There was an audible sign of relief in the theatre when that plane finally takes off! Then there's Ben Affleck the actor. First things first. I have a large man-crush on his beard. Affleck doesn't overplay his character, but he nails the emotional moments, and I was totally on board his crazy plan, with his heart very much in the right place. The supporting cast is insane, but Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin shine the brightest, getting the killer lines written by Chris Terrio.I loved 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town'. It gives me great pleasure to see Affleck stretching out from his familiar Boston, making something completely different, and getting it so right.

Gozoop Launches DecideBuddy, An Online Consumer Product ...

Decidebuddy is a digital platform that encourages consumers to review everything that they use. The site reviews products like automobiles, laptops, mobiles, books, movies, finance, travels, websites and anything else that inspires one to express his/her opinions.

?Entrepreneurship was always there in my mind. Blogging, internet marketing, online success stories, and possibility of catering to global audience while sitting at home ? all acted as triggers. I found the American Internet startup scene really fascinating and wanted to explore this field since my college days,? says Dushyant Bhatia, Co-Founder, Decidebuddy.

The core team consists of: Dushyant Bhatia who takes care of overall strategy and marketing (MD, Gozoop Dubai), Ahmed Naqvi who leads on Design (UI) and Tech (MD, Gozoop India), Rohan Bhansali who works on Product evolvement (CEO, Gozoop), Pancham Banerjee looks into Marketing Strategy and Vinay Bari who is the Portal administrator.

Talking about his entrepreneurial journey, Dushyant says that, ?After running GOZOOP?for over 4 years with my friends (and partners) Rohan and Ahmed and building a team of over 50 during this period, we knew web business was the next step. After brainstorming for a couple of weeks and discussing the pros and cons of the internet startup eco system in India, this concept made a lot of sense. Given the fact that we intend to run this portal and scale across countries without external funding, a concept like this seemed to be perfect for us.?

Product review sites are not new; hence Dushyant shares his points of view on the same, ?We also see a good opportunity in the online reviews space as a derivative of our experience of managing the online presence of over 100 clients across continents. There are a number of online review portals but overall there still exists a huge scope for maturity in this space. And the growing Indian internet demography demands it. There is a need for credibility as far as online review portals in India go. Our vision for Decidebuddy is to not only help consumer make an informed buying decision through genuine reviews but also to help brands connect and receive constructive feedback from end users.?

Decidebuddy is a Gozoop product and hence they have access to the manpower to execute their vision. These individuals have worked on international projects in India, Middle East, and Singapore. Their SEO strategy, social media strategy, PPC strategy; everything is conceptualized and executed by Gozoop.

The Indian market has always remained elusive with respect to reading reviews on the net and buying just on the basis of what someone unknown has written. Yet, Dushyant reaffirms that ?India is definitely a difficult market when it comes to content creation. We?ve noticed that a majority of Indians read reviews and make their buying decisions based on the reviews but when it comes to writing reviews, not many come forward. Surprisingly, a good chunk of traffic comes from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The large percentage of rural households in India could be one of the reasons for this figure.?

They are planning a simple business model; Dushyant adds that, ?Affiliate model seems very promising and we?re in a process of chartering into this territory. Right now, Decidebuddy crawls some online stores. We are also offered XML feeds of products and prices from a few of these stores. Prices are updated every 12 hours. At present, we do not offer premium / priority listings in our search results. Diversified revenue stream will follow but we need to get our basics right first.?

Dushyant feels that loyalty is major issue among Indian customers, ?We see a significant amount of traffic coming via search engines but what eventually we?re aiming to achieve is conversion of these search engine visitors into loyalists. That is one of our priorities. In addition to monetization plans, a lot of focus has to be given to things like user interface / experience, value offerings etc.?

They have plans on to introduce a mobile website, more product categories, more affiliate partnerships, product discovery features, stronger search algorithm, and analytics for brands.

?At this point in time, we?re looking to grow organically. We?re not looking at external funding and would like to bootstrap. Currently we?re serving Indian consumers but soon plan to launch Decidebuddy in UAE, wherein Gozoop already has a physical presence,? adds Dushyant on a concluding note.

Did the latest gadget you bought trouble you? Write a review on Decidebuddy?and assist others with their purchase.

Research The Home Alarms That Will Protect Your Family

It is a shame that we no longer live in a world where we can walk down the street safely or leave our doors unlocked even while we are in our homes. Whether you are home or not, your home is at risk for a robbery. When a robbery happens, you do not lose just things, you lose your sense of security. Also, in many cases, when the homeowners are home, there is an increased chance of physical harm. As you can start to see, there is an increased need for a quality alarm system than ever before.

Do Your Research

home-security-signsIf you are still not convinced, you might want to take a little time to do some research on the subject. This will ensure that you are getting all of the most accurate information that you can. There have been numerous studies conducted that break down the level of crime per state, per county and even per town or city. This is important information for you to know. You need to know just what it is that you are up against.

Check Out Your Options

For anyone that is considering the purchase of a home alarm system, it is important to make sure that proper research is done. There are a lot of different options through various companies and it is up to you to make sure that you are getting the alarm system that is the perfect fit. A good company to take a quick look at is that of ADT.

It is important to make sure that you are investigating all of the various alarm system packages and that you are comparing prices. You will also want to be careful to make sure that you are going with a company that you will be able to trust. The last thing you want is to go with an alarm company simply on their low prices, when you are not sure whether or not you will be able to trust their services.

Read Reviews

If you really want to get an inside look as to what the alarm companies are all about, you might want to take a little time to read through some of the reviews that an easily be found online. These reviews will give you a customer perspective of what you can look forward to when dealing with certain alarm companies.

Don?t Wait Until It?s Too Late

The last thing you want to do is to wait until something already goes wrong before you start to really think about putting an alarm system is. The whole point is to make sure that you are being proactive. With the alarm signs and stickers you will receive, the criminals that are canvassing the neighborhood will know better than to mess with your house. Should someone dare try to enter your home, your alarms will kick on and the police will be notified right away. It really does not get any safer than that.

Kyoto targets drive electronics business | SMART Group

European manufacturers can create value and win back wealth-generating businesses in energy efficient automotive projects, writes Lee Burtelson, v-p marketing, TT electronics components division.

Throughout Europe consumers continue to place tough demands for better personal transportation, in particular calling for vehicles that offer improved fuel economy to reduce running costs and CO2 emissions, and also better safety.

These are areas which benefit from advanced electronics technologies such as power modules for turbocharger intercooling and oil mist separation, engine cooling and exhaust after-treatment for greater energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

While considering the impact of electronics in advanced transportation, the current success of e-mobility solutions in the form of e-scooters, trucks and tractors in Europe is providing a valuable proving ground for high-performance traction drives.

Green energy is another area driving growth in Europe, propelled both by rising gas and electricity prices and consumer belief in the green principles.

Although Europe?s governments are trying to cut back on their expenditure generally, they are likely to continue offering financial incentives for solar and wind generation as they face pressure to meet Kyoto commitments.

Smart metering is a key aspect of the green energy revolution, and is critically dependent on new electronics technologies and techniques. Standard meters need to be changed to smart meters to meet European legislation.

Generally, European manufacturers have managed quite successfully to hold on to some of the higher value, high-tech aspects of electronics manufacturing, in sectors such as aerospace and high-reliability systems where we see growth from satellite manufacturers as well as hybrid microcircuit and power switching solutions for the oil and gas industry.

Continuing to develop technology and products that help customers meet their customers? needs for energy savings and safety will continue to provide avenues for European manufacturers to create value.?

Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe.

The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. This exposes how quantum predictions challenge our best understanding about the nature of space and time, Einstein's theory of relativity.

"We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He is now at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore.

Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test.

The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. The problem is that quantum theory predicts bizarre behaviour for particles -- such as two 'entangled' particles behaving as one even when far apart. This seems to violate our sense of cause and effect in space and time. Physicists call such behaviour 'nonlocal'.

It was Einstein who first drew attention to the worrying implications of what he termed the "spooky action at a distance" predicted by quantum mechanics. Measure one in a pair of entangled atoms to have its magnetic 'spin' pointing up, for example, and quantum physics says the other can immediately be found pointing in the opposite direction, wherever it is and even when one could not predict beforehand which particle would do what. Common sense tells us that any such coordinated behaviour must result from one of two arrangements. First, it could be arranged in advance. The second option is that it could be synchronised by some signal sent between the particles.

In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Specifically, a test of a 'Bell inequality' checks whether two particles' behaviour could have been based on prior arrangements. If measurements violate the inequality, pairs of particles are doing what quantum theory says: acting without any 'local hidden variables' directing their fate. Starting in the 1980s, experiments have found violations of Bell inequalities time and time again.

Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed. However, conventional tests of Bell inequalities can never completely kill hope of a common sense story involving signals that don't flout the principles of relativity. That's why the researchers set out to devise a new inequality that would probe the role of signals directly.

Experiments have already shown that if you want to invoke signals to explain things, the signals would have to be travelling faster than light -- more than 10,000 times the speed of light, in fact. To those who know that Einstein's relativity sets the speed of light as a universal speed limit, the idea of signals travelling 10,000 times as fast as light already sets alarm bells ringing. However, physicists have a getout: such signals might stay as 'hidden influences' -- useable for nothing, and thus not violating relativity. Only if the signals can be harnessed for faster-than-light communication do they openly contradict relativity.

The new hidden influence inequality shows that the get-out won't work when it comes to quantum predictions. To derive their inequality, which sets up a measurement of entanglement between four particles, the researchers considered what behaviours are possible for four particles that are connected by influences that stay hidden and that travel at some arbitrary finite speed.

Mathematically (and mind-bogglingly), these constraints define an 80-dimensional object. The testable hidden influence inequality is the boundary of the shadow this 80-dimensional shape casts in 44 dimensions. The researchers showed that quantum predictions can lie outside this boundary, which means they are going against one of the assumptions. Outside the boundary, either the influences can't stay hidden, or they must have infinite speed.

Experimental groups can already entangle four particles, so a test is feasible in the near future (though the precision of experiments will need to improve to make the difference measurable). Such a test will boil down to measuring a single number. In a Universe following the standard relativistic laws we are used to, 7 is the limit. If nature behaves as quantum physics predicts, the result can go up to 7.3.

So if the result is greater than 7 -- in other words, if the quantum nature of the world is confirmed -- what will it mean?

Here, there are two choices. On the one hand, there is the option to defy relativity and 'unhide' the influences, which means accepting faster-than-light communication. Relativity is a successful theory that researchers would not call into question lightly, so for many physicists this is seen as the most extreme possibility.

The remaining option is to accept that influences must be infinitely fast -- or that there exists some process that has an equivalent effect when viewed in our spacetime. The current test couldn't distinguish. Either way, it would mean that the Universe is fundamentally nonlocal, in the sense that every bit of the Universe can be connected to any other bit anywhere, instantly. That such connections are possible defies our everyday intuition and represents another extreme solution, but arguably preferable to faster-than-light communication.

"Our result gives weight to the idea that quantum correlations somehow arise from outside spacetime, in the sense that no story in space and time can describe them," says Nicolas Gisin, Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and member of the team.

The researchers that carried out the work, in addition to Dr Bancal and Prof Gisin, are Dr Stefano Pironio from the Free University of Bruxelles in Belgium, Professor Antonio Ac?n from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Dr Yeong-Cherng Liang from the University of Geneva, and Professor Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the Department of Physics of the National University of Singapore.

Crane dangling from NYC high-rise

NEW YORK (AP) ? A construction crane atop a $1.5 billion luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan collapsed in high winds Monday and dangled precariously, prompting plans for engineers and inspectors to climb 74 flights of stairs to examine it as a huge storm bore down on the city.

The harrowing inspection task was being undertaken by experts who are "the best of the best," city Buildings Department spokesman Tony Sclafani said

Some buildings were being evacuated as a precaution and the streets below were cleared, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Authorities received a call about at around 2 p.m. as conditions worsened from the approaching Hurricane Sandy. Meteorologists said winds atop the building could have been close to 95 mph at the time.

The nearly completed high-rise is known as One57 and is in one of the city's most desirable neighborhoods, near Carnegie Hall, Columbus Circle and Central Park.

The New York Times recently called it a "global billionaires' club" because the nine full-floor apartments near the top have all been sold to billionaires. Among them are two duplexes under contract for more than $90 million each.

Shannon Kaye, 96, lives in the building next door.

"We heard a noise, but we didn't know what it was," she said. Minutes later, she and her neighbors were told to leave.

"I never liked that building, looking down into my bedroom," she said. "I always had the feeling that something would come falling down from it."

The Buildings Department had suspended work at the building at 5 p.m. Saturday. It reminded contractors and property owners across the city to secure construction sites and buildings.

Construction cranes have been a source of safety worries in the city since two giant rigs collapsed within two months of each other in Manhattan in 2008, killing a total of nine people.

Those accidents spurred the resignation of the city's buildings commissioner and fueled new safety measures, including hiring more inspectors and expanding training requirements and inspection checklists.

Another crane fell and killed a worker this April at a construction site for a new subway line. That rig was exempt from most city construction safety rules because it was working for a state-overseen agency that runs the subway system.

Like Monday's accident, one of the 2008 crane collapses also centered on the rig's long, mobile arm, known as a boom. In the May 2008 accident, the boom broke off a roughly 200-foot-tall rig, crashed into a nearby building and plummeted to the ground.

Prosecutors blamed that collapse on what they called a penny-pinching repair to a crucial component that lets the boom swivel. Lawyers for that crane's owner, who ultimately was acquitted of manslaughter charges, said the operator made a mistake that tipped the boom over backward and snapped it.

No. 12 Georgia upsets turnover-prone Florida 17-9

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Shawn Williams' criticism will be remembered as a challenge.

And No. 12 Georgia responded better than anyone could have expected.

Five days after Williams ripped his defensive teammates for playing too soft, the Bulldogs turned in their best performance of the season ? one that will go down in Florida-Georgia lore.

The Bulldogs stuffed the third-ranked Gators from every angle, forcing six turnovers in a 17-9 victory Saturday that left them on the cusp of the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Call it the World's Largest Outdoor Turnover Party, and it gave Georgia consecutive wins in the heated rivalry for the first time since 1989. These have to be two of the more significant victories of coach Mark Richt's tenure.

"I'd say we're not soft," Richt said. "The defense rose to the occasion. ... Our seniors played well, and I know it's a game they'll remember for the rest of their lives."

The victory, just the fifth in the last 23 meetings for Georgia, gave them a chance for even bigger accomplishments.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 SEC) can clinch the East and a spot in the conference title game with wins against Mississippi and Auburn the next two weeks.

If Georgia plays defense like it did against Florida ? it was the first time since 1988 that UGA held the Gators without a touchdown ? getting to Atlanta should be a mere formality.

"Shawn challenged us and we took it personal," Jarvis Jones said. "As men, when another man challenges you, it will be personal. The guys stepped up to the challenge."

The Bulldogs did little on offense until Aaron Murray found Malcolm Mitchell for a 45-yard touchdown with 7:11 remaining that put them ahead 17-9. Mitchell spun out of Loucheiz Purifoy's tackle attempt and went mostly untouched the rest of the way. Florida kept the drive alive with Dominique Easley's holding penalty on third down.

Georgia sealed it with ? what else? ? a defensive play.

Jones knocked the ball out of Jordan Reed's hands at the 5-yard line, and teammate Sanders Commings recovered in the end zone with 2:05 left.

"When I saw him make the first guy miss, I thought he was going to score," Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel said. "He didn't take care of the ball, just like the whole team didn't all night."

Jones had another huge game against Florida (7-1, 6-1). The junior, who had four sacks in last year's 24-20 victory, finished with 13 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

"I had a great game, but it's about what we did as a defense," Jones said. "All of us did what we came here to do. ... It's a great feeling."

Williams' harsh words didn't go over well with coaches and teammates. He probably had a point after Georgia allowed at least 20 points in six of its first seven games and gave up 206 yards rushing last week at Kentucky.

Jones missed that game with a sprained ankle. With him back, Georgia looked like a different defense, and it surely helped that Florida self-destructed at every turn.

The Gators got behind early. Driskel fumbled twice on Florida's first three plays. Georgia recovered the second one, which set up Todd Gurley's 10-yard touchdown run.

Driskel, who completed 14 of 26 passes for 185 yards, lost another fumble, threw two interceptions and was sacked five times.

His first interception came at the end of the first half and with the Gators at the 5-yard line. Driskel rolled right on second down and threw across his body and into the end zone. Bacarri Rambo picked off the pass.

Driskel's next drive ended the same way. Under heavy pressure, he floated one over the middle that Damian Swann intercepted. It set up a Georgia field goal that made it 10-6.

Wildcat quarterback Trey Burton fumble on the ensuing possession, but Marshall Morgan missed a 37-yard attempt.

"We're capable of playing like this week in and week out," Jones said. "We should have been playing like this all year."

When the game was over, Richt and his players celebrated in every corner of EverBank Field.

"I wanted to stick around and enjoy it," Richt said. "I wanted our players to enjoy it. When you have a game like that and you have the type of success we had, you want to celebrate. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We definitely weren't trying to taunt anyone. We were just trying to celebrate with our fans."

Georgia had plenty of anxious moments before the party started.

The Gators intercepted three passes from Murray, who completed 12 of 24 passes for 150 yards, but managed just two field goals off those turnovers. Georgia also was flagged 14 times for 132 yards.

Florida made it 10-9 on Caleb Sturgis' 50-yard field goal in the fourth, but Driskel's mistakes proved to be too much to overcome.

The Gators, who turned the ball over just four times in their first seven games, had four in the first 36 minutes Saturday.

And with Mike Gillislee (77 yards) mostly bottled up, the Gators had no choice but to put the ball in Driskel's hands.

"Six turnovers. Wow," Florida coach Will Muschamp said. "That's tough to overcome. We've got to find better ways to run the football, which we did in seven of eight games this year."

Muschamp noted all season how small his team's margin for error was. It really showed as the Gators got behind early and failed to make a comeback. The Gators had been 3-0 when trailing at halftime, but they didn't make the same successful halftime adjustments that carried them in wins against Texas A&M, Tennessee and LSU.

Georgia did.

"I think our guys were very serious about playing with intensity," Richt said. "They played with physicality. They were accused of some things that guys don't like to be accused of, and that probably helped motivate them."

Sandy is set to deliver potential election surprise

Paul Beck, Ohio State University professor, describes the importance of winning Ohio, a battleground with a large number of electoral votes. It's a diverse state with liberals and conservatives matching a cross section of the nation.

By Tom Curry, NBC News national affairs writer

Hurricane Sandy is barreling toward the East Coast and could deliver the presidential campaign an unpredictable, but impactful, October surprise.

It remains too early to determine precisely where Sandy will make landfall or just how severe the storm might be, but the projections for its path have it aimed toward the mid-Atlantic region, likely impacting hotly-contested battleground states.

Sandy was briefly downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm by the NHC early Saturday, but it returned to hurricane strength within a few hours.?

Warnings as Sandy heads north?

Extensive damage, power outages, and the resulting news coverage could push the election into the background, at least in that region, and could wreak havoc on campaign plans for the final week of the race between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Travel schedules, television advertising buys, and voter outreach could all be impacted ? and in some cases, already have been.

A Romney official said Friday that the campaign is keeping a very close eye on the storm and had already decided to cancel a planned rally on Sunday night in Virginia Beach. Vice President Joe Biden also cancelled a Virginia Beach event on Saturday, and a rally for First Lady Michelle Obama planned for Tuesday at the University of New Hampshire in Durham was also canceled, officials said Friday.

Said the Obama campaign of the change in the vice president's schedule, "This ... is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm."?

After strong winds and heavy rain washed out bridges and damaged homes in multiple countries, the hurricane looks toward the northeastern U.S.

It?isn't?yet clear whether Sandy will affect Obama?s scheduled events with former president Bill Clinton in Florida and Virginia on Monday.

Since March, the two presidential campaigns and outside groups have invested $144 million in radio and TV ads in Virginia, with $27 million spent just in the past two weeks. Virginia ranks third in the amount of presidential campaign advertising, after Ohio and Florida.

If local TV stations in Virginia interrupt their regularly scheduled programming in order to broadcast bulletins and live coverage of the storm?s impact, then a campaign ad which had been booked for a specific time on a specific station would not air.

The station would refund the money paid for the ad, but at this point in the election season, campaigns don?t want their money back -- they want their ads to run.?

RELATED: Ad spending on presidential race surpasses $900 million

Of course, even if stations do run those already-booked campaign ads, thousands of Virginia homes might be without power ? and millions of dollars in ad buys could be still wasted.

After the intense ?derecho? storm swept through the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic region with 70-mile-per-hour winds on June 29, electricity for millions of customers was effectively knocked out.

In some areas around Washington, D.C., power was out for a week. And outages in Virginia due to Sandy could conceivably last into Election Day itself.

Voting requires polling locations which have the lights on and?aren't?under water, so this storm also raises the question of how election officials are preparing to ensure that balloting isn?t disrupted on Election Day.

Mitt Romney has just wrapped up what his campaign billed a major economic speech, at the heart of his closing arguments. Democratic strategist Elmendorf, Romney campaign economic adviser Vin Weber and The Economist's Greg Ip break it down.

According to Virginia State Board of Elections spokeswoman Nikki?Sheridan, the board has been coordinating with the state Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia State Police, the state Department of Transportation, major utility companies, and the 134 voting registrars who administer the election across the state ?to monitor the weather situation and, if necessary ? act accordingly.? ?

The board has told local election officials that ?unless conditions render the voting process unsafe? for employees and voters, registrars should keep their offices ?open and to continue the in-person voting process? already underway in the state.?

The final decision whether to close a general registrar?s office ?will be made by local authorities or first responders after consultation with your office and electoral board,? the board said.

RELATED: Focusing on Ohio and Colorado

In a press conference Friday afternoon, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Romney supporter, said, ?There are obviously concerns about making sure we?re ready for Election Day which will only be a week after the departure of this storm.?

He said that the president of Dominion Power, the state?s major power provider, has told him that the utility would add election locations ?as a top priority for power restoration in addition to hospitals and schools and so forth, so I think that is prudent as well, but we don?t anticipate adverse election issues at this time.?

The candidates crisscross the country hitting the battleground states trying to lock up key electoral votes and Domenico demonstrates the electronic map to 270.

He said the electric utility had a ?well-thought out set of priorities for what to restore? and ?at this point I don?t see anything happening that would interfere with the election.?

He also said ?I expect both candidates and both parties to monitor the situation and if they think they?re going to be interfering with first responder operations? to cancel their Virginia campaign events. ?They?re not going to get coverage and they?re not going to get people coming out (to events) because they?re not going to stand out in the rain so they?d be smart to make alternative plans.?

Ross Goldstein, deputy administrator of the Maryland Board of Elections, said Friday, ?We?re in contact with state emergency management. We?ve given utility companies a list of polling locations so that they know where our needs are.?

He added that ?all of our voting equipment has battery backup,? but noted that, obviously, electricity would be needed to keep the lights on at polling locations.

As in Virginia, Maryland voters have the option of early voting, beginning in the state on Saturday, with one-to-five polling places per county.

In a conference call on Friday, elections officials in Maryland and eight other East Coast states conferred with Louisiana Commissioner of Elections Angie Rogers to find out what officials in her state have learned from coping with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and other subsequent storms.

Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler said Friday that contingency plans must be made for both before and after Election Day.

Obama campaign co-chair Kal Penn joins Andrea Mitchell Reports to discuss the youth vote in the 2012 election.

?Number one, before the storm, secure the (voting) equipment, move it if necessary, get it out of harm?s way,? he said.

?Number two, get good information on where your poll workers are going to be, make sure you have their cell numbers and evacuation plans so you can get in touch with them if you?ve moved a precinct," he said.

"Then after the storm, determine if your locations are still viable and usable and if they?re not, make sure you move and consolidate precincts. We did that here in Louisiana with the big mayoral election after Katrina. As long as you have locations, power and equipment or paper ballots -- you can still have the election and go forward," he added.

Schedler said another tip for elections officials in storm-affected areas: ?Make sure you have a good relationship with the National Guard in your state. Here in Louisiana we used the National Guard to set up large tents for ?mega-sites.? They provided us generators. And think about public restrooms, you may need to bring in some Portalets (portable toilets) when setting up as site like that. You need to anticipate just like you do in any emergency.?

He also suggested that state officials in Sandy's path urge people to vote early.

NBC News? Garrett Haake contributed to this report.

Marcus Lattimore has a dislocated right knee.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said running back Marcus Lattimore had his right knee dislocated against Tennessee and the injury is something he can come back from to play football again.

Spurrier visited Lattimore on Sunday and said the junior had a good attitude about his condition. Spurrier said South Carolina team doctor Jeffrey Guy was able to put Lattimore's knee back in place soon after he was taken from the field to the hospital.

Spurrier said the injury was significant, but discounted speculation Lattimore would never play football again. Lattimore has not used a redshirt season so he could take as long as necessary to recover and still return to the Gamecocks for the 2014 season.

Spurrier hasn't yet talked with Lattimore about his future.

Hurricane Sandy: what to expect from North Carolina to Massachusetts to Ohio

Hurricane Sandy could dump 10 inches of rain along the coast and a foot of snow in the Appalachians. It could also bring a strong storm surge and tropical-force winds.

How major?

On Friday, the weather experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) began to quantify what residents from North Carolina to Massachusetts to Ohio can expect starting early next week.

NOAA?s latest projections show the storm coming ashore in Delaware and then moving into southern Pennsylvania. However, the storm?s course could change.

In all likelihood Sandy, which is not expected to be a hurricane when it comes ashore, will dump a very large amount of rain. It could dump 10 inches along the coast close to the area of landfall. Inland, expect five to 10 inches of rain, NOAA says.

Rivers including the Susquehanna, Schuykill, and Potomac could spill over their banks.

?There is a widespread risk of flooding,? said Louis Uccellini, director of NOAA?s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, at a Friday press conference.

Further west in the Appalachian Mountains, all the rain will turn to snow ? a lot of snow for this early in the season.

NOAA expects a foot of snow in West Virginia, but it wouldn?t be surprised to see two feet. Even eastern Ohio, where politicians are scrambling for votes, has the potential for four to eight inches of heavy snow, according to NOAA.

Some coastal communities could not only see huge amounts of rain, but also a very strong storm surge. Unlike 2011?s hurricane/tropical storm Irene, which was parallel to the shoreline, Sandy is poised to arrive perpendicular to the beaches.

?Someone will get a significant surge, but too early to say what that will be,? said James Franklin, branch chief at NOAA?s National Hurricane Center, during the press conference. ?The onshore airflow will be bringing the surge in so locally it will be in excess of Irene.?

Since NOAA?s computer models have a margin of error of about 200 miles four days before a hurricane makes landfall, it is too early to say exactly where Sandy will come ashore, the weather agency says.

No matter where it meets land, a very large area will be involved, NOAA says. And tropical-force winds ? near hurricane-force strength at times ? can be expected from North Carolina to New England. Unlike a ?normal? hurricane, where the wind fields can miss some areas, that isn?t likely to be the case with the remains of Sandy. Almost everywhere along the Northeast coast can expect gales, said NOAA.

But the winds could also be very strong as far west as Cincinnati; Louisville, Ky.; and Evansville, Ind. ?We could see winds of greater than 50 miles per hour in the Ohio Valley,? Mr. Uccellini said.

Unlike most hurricanes, which move past an area in a few hours, the remains of Sandy are expected to move very slowly. Thus the winds could last for two or three days, NOAA says.

?We do expect a lot of wind damage,? said Mr. Franklin.

Type 1 Diabetes No Match for Primal Lifestyle! | Mark's Daily Apple

It?s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark?s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark?s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I?ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!

real life stories stories 1 2My name is Shawn and I am 28 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about a year ago. I haven?t seen many stories or articles related to diabetes on the MDA website so I thought I would share how going Primal has helped me take back control over my health and wellbeing.

First of all, I have actually been very healthy most of my life (or so I thought). In college I lifted weights, ran, and did pushups and sit-ups in my dorm room on a regular basis. I despised salad and fresh veggies, and loaded up on Hamburger Helper, cereal, and PB&J because it was convenient and I ?worked it all off? during my workouts. I am 6? tall and my weight maxed out at about 205 lbs (92 kgs) during my last year of college (2007)?perfectly healthy I thought.

PIC1 1

Fast forward several years (during which I managed to drop about 10 lbs thanks to army basic training) to September of 2011. I started losing weight?lots of weight?about 25 lbs in 3 weeks to be exact, I drank water by the gallons, and I could no longer exercise without getting severe cramping in my legs. Something was obviously wrong, so I made an appointment with my doctor who I hadn?t seen in about 10 years. I had a fasting blood sugar level of 350 (normal is 70-99 mg/dL). The last several months of 2011 were very challenging. There was no explanation why I got this disease (no family history) and trying to come to terms with the fact that I would have to deal with this every day for the rest of my life was a bit overwhelming. I started working with diabetes educators and nutritionists at the local hospital and was told that I should take in about 320 CARBS/DAY(!!) based on my activity level. And they call themselves nutritionists?? Even my endocrinologist said I could eat whatever I wanted because the disease ?sucks enough the way it is? and I just needed to shoot up with enough insulin to cover the food I was eating. At this point I still did not know any better so I bought into their conventional wisdom.

PIC2

Needless to say, my blood sugar control was not good. I would go up to 250 right after meals, but since I dropped down to normal again after a few hours my doctor was fine with it. Being all too aware of the side effects of uncontrolled blood sugar, I decided to educate myself and become my own ?nutritionist/doctor.?

Around January of this year a friend exposed me to the paleo diet. I checked it out and was intrigued. I started doing extensive reading and research (during which I came across this website) and decided to give it a try. I slowly started purging out the sugars/carbs/processed foods that were poisoning my body (especially cereal which was a staple of my diet at the time), and whaddya know?my blood sugars and overall health improved drastically, and my insulin requirements dropped like a rock!!!

Fast forward another 8 months to today and life has never been better! Through my faith, support of my wonderful wife and family, and a little help from the Primal Blueprint, I have been able to cope with my diabetes to the point that it is a mere afterthought in my everyday life. My diet includes massive amounts of meat/eggs/veggies/salad/nuts to fuel my active lifestyle, ~120 carbs worth/day with virtually no SAD food (if I do slip up, my blood sugar pays the price!). I do still indulge in some diabetic friendly, Primally questionable foods (quite a bit of cheese, a few peanuts, and the occasional artificially sweetened drink). I guess there is always room for improvement? I still work out quite often, but in Primal fashion: biking in to work as often as possible (~16 miles, 50 minutes each way), sprint sessions when I can?t get on the bike, and circuit-type training with pushups/pullups/core exercises/any other bodyweight exercise I can think up 4-5 days/week . The results: My weight has stabilized at 187 lbs (slightly less than pre-diabetes weight) while also managing to drop a couple pants sizes. I have tons of energy, especially compared to some of my type 2 diabetic relatives who always feel run-down due to their poor diets. (I?m trying to convert them, but no luck as of yet). And of course, combined with the omnipod insulin pump that I am now on (which I would strongly recommend to all insulin-dependent diabetics) I find it quite easy to tightly control my blood sugars (i.e. less than 100 AT ALL TIMES with very few hypoglycemic episodes, i.e. low blood sugar). And possibly the best part, my family/friends/coworkers are noticing these changes and starting to question their own diets and lifestyle habits?it?s like a contagious disease (the good kind)!

PIC3

A few stats for the diabetics out there (or non-diabetics) who may be interested:

  • A1C ? September 2011=13.0 (newly diagnosed), January 2012=5.7 (pre-Primal), May 2012=5.4 (partially Primal), November 2012=?? (should be under 5).
  • Average total insulin use per day (bolus+basal)=13-14 units (doctor thinks I?m still in the honeymoon phase after 1 year. Possibly, but I think it?s more a result of my diet and fitness level.)
  • Cholesterol levels at diagnosis: HDL=35, LDL=90, Tri=sky high because of high BS. Next test in November, the real indicator of the effectiveness of my new lifestyle!

I look forward to a long and healthy life (in spite of the diabetes) as my Primal lifestyle continues to evolve, and hopefully I can get more people on board! Thanks for reading and I hope this can provide some motivation for the diabetics out there who may need a little extra motivation once in a while!

Game of Thrones?

I'm really in love with Game of Thrones, and I'm looking to see if anyone would be interested in doing a roleplay sort of revolving around the whole plot of all that. I know I'm sort of rambling here, but I don't really know what else to say. Using original characters and ones from the show/books would be preferable.

Clearwire moves forward with Huawei in network upgrades after federal consultation

China's Huawei has found itself followed by a cloud of suspicion from governments and national security agencies, both in America, and futher afield. A recent announcement from Clearwire stating it will use the firms hardware in a network upgrade, however, could see some sunshine of confidence finally poking through. Reuters reports that the service provider consulted several technical departments from various federal agencies before making the decision. Clearwire already uses some Huawei equipment in its infrastructure, and it's in these areas that the hardware will be used for upgrades. The firm went on to assure that, overall, less than 5 percent of its LTE budget involves Huawei gear, and irregardless of origin, all vendors are subject to approval from US government approved third parties.

Strategy Analytics claims Android is up to 41 percent of tablets in Q3, iPad may feel the heat

Three months can make all the difference, at least if you're drafting estimates at Strategy Analytics. Now that we know 14 million iPads shipped in the third quarter, the analyst group believes that Apple's tablet market share dropped from 68.3 percent in the spring to 56.7 percent in the summer. All of the shift is attributed to Android -- researchers think that shipments of Google-based tablets surged from 7.3 million to 10.2 million, handing the platform 41 percent of an increasingly crowded space. It's the "collective weight" of so many Android-reliant companies leaping into the market rather than any one of them pulling ahead, Strategy Analytics says. We wouldn't be shocked if a few Kindle Fire HD sales played a part.

More than a few wildcards still surround the figures and their long-term impact. First is that these are estimates, not concrete results: companies like Amazon steadfastly refuse to provide shipment numbers and leave most of the final tally beyond Apple to educated guesswork. It's also an understatement to say that the market will change dramatically before 2012 is over. Between Windows 8's launch, possible Nexus 7 upgrades and two new iPads, there are a lot of pieces moving on the chessboard.
