? JOHOR BARU: DITCH the workout, join the party.? That is the tagline of the latest fitness programme to hit Johor Baru, and it?s called the zumba dance.
? Currently, there are five licensed zumba instructors in the city.
? one of them is 29-year-old Peggy Kua.
? In her zumba class, which lasts for an hour,? participants dance to mostly Latin music such as for the salsa dance.
? People also dance to international hits from various countries.
? ?It?s a 70:30 ratio, to be precise, and anything that does not follow this rule is not? zumba.
? ?This is because we are worried that unlicensed instructors may adopt the basic steps of zumba, but change the music and call it something else,? she clarified.
? For her zumba class, Kua? advises her students to come clad in bright colours to enliven the mood.
? ?Though there are basic steps in the dance, we do not stress so much on memorising or following the steps.
? ?If participants find? the steps too hard, then? we tell them to just shake their bodies and have fun,? she said.
? ?People here are still shy and conservative compared?? with Caucasians and Singaporeans, or even those from Kuala Lumpur who are more outgoing,? she said.
?? Kua, who was born in Johor Baru and raised in Kluang, said she studied modern dance for two years.
? she was a yoga instructor for a while at the Peace Studio in Taman Sutera Utama and Taman Molek, both in Johor Baru.
? ?I got my licence in zumba this year, and started conducting classes about a month ago. ?
? ?I currently have some 30 students at Taman Sutera Utama,? she said.
? A zumba fitness class is designed for adults of all ages.
? For children, it?s?? ?zumbatomic? sessions for them.
? ?We are looking for more licensed zumba instructors,? she said.

? Zumba is a Colombian dance fitness programme created by dancer and choreographer Alberto Beto Perez? in the 1990s. ?
? The choreography incorporates hip-hop,? soca , samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts,? Bollywood and belly dance moves.
?? there are also twists, squats and jumps.
? Zumba came about when Perez, who was teaching aerobics to a group of students, forgot to bring his tape of music to class. ?
? He then improvised by using a tape of traditional salsa and merengue music.
? The students apparently enjoyed the session and that was how zumba was born. ?
? it soon spread to the United States and other parts of the world.
? A typical zumba session can burn between 500 and 1,000 calories.
? Zumba classes are conducted at Peace Studio is Taman Sutera Utama from 7.30pm to 8.30pm every Thursday.
? Maryne Cheong, 47, a pre-school educator, said she joined the class to ?sweat it out? after work. ?
? she said the sessions were always full of fun and laughter.
? Sharing her sentiment was Nicole low, 26, an accounts clerk who said she felt more energetic after joining the zumba class.
?? ?I also practise yoga so that I can enjoy a balance of? fast and slow routines,? said low.
? Another participant? chiropractor Jempi Chan, 22,? stood out as he was the only thorn among the roses in the zumba sessions.
??This is my first session, so I haven?t felt the health benefits yet.
? ?However, I find the experience to be fun and not as serious as other workouts,? said Chan.
? Participants can sign up for the unlimited package which ranges from RM350 to RM908 for three months to a year, respectively.
? Or they can opt for the? coupon package which is selling at RM140 for 14 sessions.

My post today will in fact talk about estate planning, but I?d like to tell you about the amazing, long-lasting effects that charitable giving can have when it is part of your estate plan. I have the privilege of serving as a Wish Granter for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona. This gives me the opportunity to meet and visit with children and teenagers from the ages of 2 to 18 who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. I then have the awesome assignment of talking to the kids to help them determine what their one, true wish is ? afterwards working with the Arizona Chapter of Make-A-Wish to make that wish a reality.
