Golf tournament to help provide nutritional support

By: Amy Wagner | Culpeper Star-Exponent

With a heart for children in need, a local woman has organized a golf tournament to provide nutritional support to children in the Culpeper area, who would normally go without, during the school year.

All golfers are encouraged to tee off at the Culpeper Country Club on Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. and participate in a silent auction that closes at 3 p.m.? A $75 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and lunch and the benefits to area kids are immeasurable.

The idea evolved out of a similar project facilitated at a church in Haymarket. Jennifer Hulse, who calls her project the Power Pack Program, wanted to provide children from Culpeper with weekend meals so they wouldn?t go without.?

After presenting her idea to her pastor, Randy Orndorff, at Culpeper United Methodist Church, Hulse was directed to the Missions committee. Receiving their support, Hulse, who moved to Culpeper from Texas in 2006, ran with the idea and CUMC agreed to provide the home for her project.

Initially, the Power Pack Program will provide 12 students from Emerald Hill Elementary School with two breakfast, two lunch, and two dinner meals each weekend, including two snacks and beverages. These students are on the reduced meal plan and their families have reached out for extra assistance.

The packs will be distributed, discreetly, every Friday throughout the school year and provide 12 to 14 individual servings of non-perishable food items such as tuna, pasta, rice, cereal, pop tarts, and drinks.

CUMC is a drop off site [in the Narthex] for those who wish to donate non-perishable food items. Food items will be packed in large zip lock bags before they are taken to Emerald Hill for distribution where they will be inconspicuously placed into specific backpacks.? The first packs will be distributed the day of the tournament.

Hulse, a 32-year-old ER nurse, has big expectations for the Power Pack Program.

?This golf tournament is the first of many,? she said.

?After Thanksgiving break we are opening the program to other students,? said Hulse explaining that Emerald Hill has 200 kids that use the reduced meal plan which is why she chose to start with that school.

?And Emerald Hill is the smallest school of need in Culpeper,? Hulse said.?

The tournament registration fee is $75 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart and lunch.

?The Power Pack Program receives only $17.40 of each registration so sponsors are very important. Hole sponsors are $100; cart sponsors are $200; event sponsors are $500 and all sponsorship money, which is tax deductible, goes directly to the Power Pack Program.

Sponsor banners will be placed at holes and on carts. Event sponsors will have signage at the registration table, which will be moved to silent auction table after the tournament starts. One event sponsor, Farm Credit and Country Mortgage, has already registered.

This year?s tournament is a better ball tournament with a shotgun start. Registration forms may be picked up at CUMC, beginning Sept. 5, and completed in advance though limited registration will be available at the tournament.?

Prizes, donated by Meadows Farm, will be awarded for closest to the hole and longest drive.?

A silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Power Pack Program. Gift baskets from local businesses, jewelry, photos and gift certificates to local restaurants, including It?s About Thyme, will be auction items.

Hulse, acknowledges that the Power Pack Program is initially serving as a test run and, after some tweaking, she said, ?It will be offered to other students, hopefully going county-wide in the future.?

Monetary donations can be made payable to CUMC with Power Pack Program denoted on the memo line.

Online Marketing For Local Businesses How To Use Internet ...

As a small business owner you are probably aware of the fact that lucrative opportunities exist on the Internet to promote your local business. There are a range of different methods you can use to promote your products and services. Some of these methods include search engine optimization, pay per click advertising, email marketing, video marketing and local listings, also known as business directories. Using these methods effectively allows you to connect with a willing audience. Your potential customers are turning to the Internet to find local products and services. If your competitors have an optimised online presence and you don't, it should be obvious who will take home the prize.

I have written several essential techniques below to help you promote your business regionally:

  • Listings in local search engines and directories
  • Pay Per Click advertising in Google and Yahoo
  • Email marketing
  • Search engine optimization

Local Listings

If you don?t have a web site you can still promote your local business online

. For example, you can list your business and contact information with the major local search engines of Yahoo, Bing and Google. The process should be no longer than an hour at the most to get a free listing on the three most popular search engines. If you list with all of them it will include an interactive map that can drive customers right to your front door if you have a shop or to your business via the internet.
It is important that you also don't overlook regional, national and industry specific directories. Many of these directories accept free listings, or charge a nominal fee. For most a web site is not a necessary prerequisite to list your business details.

?

Pay Per Click Advertising

If you do have a web site, you may want to consider promoting your local business through Pay Per Click on both Google and Yahoo. With Pay Per Click Advertising you bid on keyword terms that your potential customers would use in a search. An example is ?London Wedding Photographer.? The cost you will pay per click depends on how competitive the term is ? i.e. who else is bidding on the same keyword. You will only pay if someone clicks on your text ad and is taken to your site. This is referred to as performance advertising, where you only pay if the ad performs.
The appeal of PPC is that you can get started within an hour. You determine the budget you want to spend, what keywords are relevant, and your price per click. You can also turn it on or off in an instance whenever you want. The general consensus is that PPC generates a higher return on your investment over traditional advertising methods such as newspapers and flyers. Click here if you want a Free Google ?50 Adwords Voucher to start your advertising campaign.

?

Search Engine Optimsation ? Free Traffic

If you like a challenge there is search engine optimization. SEO is the abbreviation of search engine optimisation, the ability to optimise your web site for high search ranking. If you are able to optimize your site properly, you will benefit from an endless stream of free, targeted search engine traffic. It takes time and effort, but the results can take your business to a whole new level as the results will have longevity.
If you are selling nationally SEO can be cutthroat, particularly if you have very little experience. However if you are a local business it can be relatively easy to rank for terms that relate to your business and location. (Example, Richmond Wedding Photographer)

?

Local Email Marketing

Another brilliant marketing tool is email. For almost nothing you can communicate with both prospects and existing customers. Email is an effective method to convert prospects to customers. It can significantly increase the lifetime value of your existing customers by basically alerting them to upcoming sales and promotions.

Knowing the power of email communication, I find it hard to believe how few small business owners use it to promote their local business. My advice? Start collecting your customer's email addresses today. I can guarantee they will respond favourably to joining your list. We all like to be informed on bargains and special offers.

The future of your local business will depend on the Internet. It is estimated 35% of searches made online are for local products and services. The Internet is the perfect resource for your customers and potential customers who are searching for local products and services, which is they are searching online. If you are not using online strategies now is the time to get your business positioned to reap the rewards.

BERLIN (AP) ? Samsung has unveiled a voice-controlled camera as part of a fall lineup of consumer gadgets aimed at setting itself apart from rival Apple.

The South Korean electronics giant presented the 16-megapixel Galaxy Camera at the IFA tech show in Berlin on Wednesday.

The company also announced two new phones, the Galaxy Note II and the ATIV S running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.

Samsung says the devices will be available in many countries from the end of October.

Paralympic torch to be lit at 'spiritual home'

The London 2012 Paralympic flame will be created on Tuesday at the spiritual home of disabled sport, signifying the start of a 24-hour torch relay before the start of this year's Games.

The head of the International Paralympic Committee, Philip Craven, London organising committee chief Sebastian Coe and other dignitaries will be at Stoke Mandeville Stadium in southern England for the ceremony at 1830 GMT.

Joining them will be Eva Loeffler, whose father Ludwig Guttmann organised the first recognised sporting event for disabled athletes in 1948, giving birth to the Paralympic movement and the creation of the first Games 12 years later.

The London 2012 Paralympic Flame will be created out of four "national flames" that have been kindled by scouts on the four highest peaks in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

It will then be carried overnight from the world-famous centre for spinal injuries 92 miles (148 kilometres) to the British capital and past major landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London.

Queen Elizabeth II is due to open the Games at a ceremony on Wednesday evening, signalling the start of 10 days of competition involving some 4,200 athletes.

The 1948 Stoke Mandeville Games were organised by Guttmann, a German Jewish neurologist who fled the Nazis, and involved just 16 competitors in wheelchairs, all of them World War II veterans with spinal injuries.

They were timed to coincide with the first post-war Olympics in London the same year and became so popular they were repeated annually, with the first international event in 1952, when a team of Dutch veterans came to compete.

Guttmann managed to convince organisers of the 1960 Rome Olympics to allow 400 wheelchair athletes from 23 countries to compete in a "parallel" event and the Paralympics were born

The doctor died in 1980 and his daughter, now 79, said he would have been proud of how disabled sport had developed, with the London Olympics even seeing its first double-amputee competitor in South Africa's Oscar Pistorius.

Pistorius -- dubbed the "Blade Runner" because he runs on carbon fibre prosthetics -- made the semi-final of the men's 400m and the final of the 4x400m relay.

He is set to defend his Paralympic T44 100m, 200m and 400m titles at the London Games, which a near sell-out for the first time, and whose mascot is called Mandeville in tribute to where it all began.

Loeffler, who has been made honorary mayor of the Athletes' Village in east London, told AFP in an interview: "As early as 1956 he (her father) said, 'I dream of the time when disabled people will take part in the Olympic Games'.

"No-one but he could have made a statement like that in 1956. It was very far-fetched but his dream has come true. I think he would be immensely proud."

Apple lists 8 Samsung products it wants banned

(AP) ? Apple Inc. on Monday gave a federal judge a list of eight Samsung Electronics Co. products it wants pulled from shelves and banned from the U.S. market.

U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh asked for the list after a jury in San Jose last week slammed Samsung with a $1.05 billion verdict, finding that the South Korean technology giant had "willfully" copied Apple's iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing the products. Samsung plans an appeal.

The products Apple wants banished from the United States are all smartphones: Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

Koh on June 26 banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from the U.S. market after finding it likely violated a "design patent." Samsung is now asking for that ban to be lifted after the jury found the computer tablet didn't infringe that particular patent, but it did find it infringed three Apple's software patents that cover the popular "bounce-back" and pinch-to-zoom features.

The judge has scheduled a Sept. 20 hearing to discuss Apple's demands for the sales bans. She asked Apple on Friday to submit the list of products its wants removed from U.S. stores after Samsung complained it doesn't have enough time to prepare for the scheduled hearing.

The judge is deciding whether to reschedule the hearing to give Samsung more time to prepare. The South Korean company plans to ask the judge to toss out the jury's verdict as unsupported by the evidence. Failing that, the company says it will appeal the verdict to higher courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

In addition to the sales bans, Apple also plans to ask the judge to triple the damages to $3.15 billion because of the jury's finding that Samsung "willfully" copied Apple.

Apple filed its lawsuit in April of last year alleging that 28 Samsung smartphones and computer tablets had "slavishly copied" the iPhones and iPads. Samsung countered with its own claims that Apple used its wireless technology without proper compensation.

A nine-person jury in its verdict Friday unanimously agreed with Apple. Most of the damages were tied to Samsung's smartphones. It rejected Samsung's counterclaims.

Most of the Samsung products found to have "infringed' Apple's patent were older devices no longer being sold. The list Apple presented to the court on Monday represent devices it believes are still being sold in U.S. stores, including several versions of the company's popular S2 phones introduced last year. Samsung's newest and hottest selling smartphone, the Galaxy S3, was not part of the lawsuit and is unaffected by the jury's verdict.

The award represents about 1.5 percent of Samsung's annual revenue. Analysts said the embarrassment of the verdict is a bigger blow for Samsung than the financial setback.

Still, the question remains whether Samsung and other Apple competitors will have to redesign their smartphones to avoid infringing Apple's patents. Most analysts agree the verdict sends a threatening message to device makers like Samsung who use Google's Android operating system.

Conventions are here ... but where are celebs?

AFP - Getty Images file

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, left, and President Barack Obama.

By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

The Democratic and Republican conventions of 2008 had guest lists that read like any legitimate Hollywood party. Ben Affleck, Oprah Winfrey, Kanye West, Susan Sarandon and literally dozens of other celebrities had a massive presence at political events and on the streets of Denver and St. Paul.?

Four years later, the tip sheets for the conventions? big events in Tampa and Charlotte, N.C., are decidedly less glamorous. Is this a sign that celebs have fallen out of love with politics? Is hope so 2008? While there will still be some Hollywood presence, the majority of A-listers will be of the political variety at these upcoming conventions, and according to some experts, that?s to be expected.

?It was unlikely to happen again. (2008) was a really unique confluence of events,? former democratic strategist Matthew Hiltzik told NBC News of the 2008 conventions. ?You had the entertainment world, which typically does skew democratic, and the opportunity to have a Democrat in the White House for the first time in eight years combined with historic nature of Barack Obama?s candidacy. It lead to overwhelming enthusiasm. I think this year it?s a lot more focused on the issues.?

That is definitely the case with the One campaign, Bono?s anti-poverty organization. In 2008, One was behind the DNC?s toughest party ticket: a Kanye West performance attended by Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Ashley Judd. This year, One is hosting panel discussions.

?No big parties this time, instead we?re focusing on policy-heavy panel discussions,? One spokesperson Ari Goldberg said. ?It?s not that celebs weren?t interested. It?s definitely a decision that was made on our end to be more policy heavy. It?s a time of fiscal responsibility, too.?

Hiltzik agrees that there?s added focus on the cost associated with such events. Headliners don?t perform out of the kindness of their own hearts, after all. At a minimum, it?s standard to cover travel expenses and accommodations for most celebrities, and some also command appearance fees. ?Four years later with many Americans facing challenging economic times, it would seem that the celebratory celebrity tone would be off message,? said Hiltzik.

Even though One has swapped Kanye in Denver for talks in Tampa it doesn?t mean there won?t be some fun. The Recording Industry Association of America (which was also part of the One/Kanye event in Denver) is teaming up with charity Musicians on Call for a Gavin DeGraw fundraiser concert in Tampa and one featuring Common in Charlotte, N.C.

?For us, it?s a bit of the same as 2008,? said RIAA?s Cara Duckworth. ?We celebrate music so we always get a good level of interest. And we?re seeing that leading up to both events. We?re happy to accommodate.?

Rock the Vote says its presence will be quite similar to that of 2008.

?We?re doing a concert at each of the conventions, which is what we did last (time),? spokesperson Chrissy Faessen said. ?For Rock the Vote, it?s core to our history. Musicians and artists have always been a part of how we deliver our message to young people. They?re great messengers for getting young people out there to vote.?

Regardless of the economy, ?people still love the music,? said Hiltzik. ?Some people are going to come out for the access to that concert, to the performance. The primary celebrity is most helpful when it?s musical talent performing at fundraisers. Those events have a much bigger draw than one where Joe Schmo celebrity shows up.?

Fujitsu and Acacia resolve patent disputes with settlement, keep it out of the courts

Fujitsu and Acacia resolve patent disputes with settlement, keep it out of the courtsFujitsu's bank balance may be a little lighter today, since Acacia Research Corp. has reported that subsidiaries of both companies have signed a settlement deal over patent disputes. As usual, Acacia is keeping tight-lipped about exactly what the patents cover, but a little digging on our part has revealed they are related to flash memory and RAM technologies. The agreement resolves lawsuits in the works at district courts in Texas and California, which is probably a good thing. After all, these cases can get pretty messy when they go to court.

Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, dies at 82

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Neil Armstrong was a quiet self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step on to the moon. The modest man who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter million miles away has died. He was 82.

Armstrong died following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, his family said in a statement Saturday. It didn't say where he died.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said.

In those first few moments on the moon, during the climax of heated space race with the then-Soviet Union, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

The moonwalk marked America's victory in the Cold War space race that began Oct. 4, 1957, with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1, a 184-pound satellite that sent shock waves around the world.

Although he had been a Navy fighter pilot, a test pilot for NASA's forerunner and an astronaut, Armstrong never allowed himself to be caught up in the celebrity and glamor of the space program.

"I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession."

A man who kept away from cameras, Armstrong went public in 2010 with his concerns about President Barack Obama's space policy that shifted attention away from a return to the moon and emphasized private companies developing spaceships. He testified before Congress and in an email to The Associated Press, Armstrong said he had "substantial reservations," and along with more than two dozen Apollo-era veterans, he signed a letter calling the plan a "misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future."

Armstrong's modesty and self-effacing manner never faded.

When he appeared in Dayton in 2003 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, he bounded onto a stage before 10,000 people packed into a baseball stadium. But he spoke for only a few seconds, did not mention the moon, and quickly ducked out of the spotlight.

He later joined former astronaut and Sen. John Glenn to lay wreaths on the graves of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Glenn introduced Armstrong and noted it was 34 years to the day that Armstrong had walked on the moon.

"Thank you, John. Thirty-four years?" Armstrong quipped, as if he hadn't given it a thought.

At another joint appearance, the two embraced and Glenn commented: "To this day, he's the one person on Earth, I'm truly, truly envious of."

Armstrong's moonwalk capped a series of accomplishments that included piloting the X-15 rocket plane and making the first space docking during the Gemini 8 mission, which included a successful emergency splashdown.

In the years afterward, Armstrong retreated to the quiet of the classroom and his southwest Ohio farm. Aldrin said in his book "Men from Earth" that Armstrong was one of the quietest, most private men he had ever met.

In the Australian interview, Armstrong acknowledged that "now and then I miss the excitement about being in the cockpit of an airplane and doing new things."

At the time of the flight's 40th anniversary, Armstrong again was low-key, telling a gathering that the space race was "the ultimate peaceful competition: USA versus U.S.S.R. It did allow both sides to take the high road with the objectives of science and learning and exploration."

Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut program, described him as "exceptionally brilliant" with technical matters but "rather retiring, doesn't like to be thrust into the limelight much."

Derek Elliott, curator of the Smithsonian Institution's U.S. Air and Space Museum from 1982 to 1992, said the moonwalk probably marked the high point of space exploration.

The manned lunar landing was a boon to the prestige of the United States, which had been locked in a space race with the former Soviet Union, and re-established U.S. pre-eminence in science and technology, Elliott said.

"The fact that we were able to see it and be a part of it means that we are in our own way witnesses to history," he said.

The 1969 landing met an audacious deadline that President Kennedy had set in May 1961, shortly after Alan Shepard became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight. (Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin had orbited the Earth and beaten the U.S. into space the previous month.)

"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth," Kennedy had said. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important to the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

The end-of-decade goal was met with more than five months to spare. "Houston: Tranquility Base here," Armstrong radioed after the spacecraft settled onto the moon. "The Eagle has landed."

"Roger, Tranquility," the Houston staffer radioed back. "We copy you on the ground. You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot."

The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship Columbia 60 miles overhead while Armstrong and Aldrin went to the moon's surface.

In all, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon between 1969 and the last moon mission in 1972.

For Americans, reaching the moon provided uplift and respite from the Vietnam War, from strife in the Middle East, from the startling news just a few days earlier that a young woman had drowned in a car driven off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The landing occurred as organizers were gearing up for Woodstock, the legendary three-day rock festival on a farm in the Catskills of New York.

Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel.

As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

Armstrong enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering but was called to duty with the U.S. Navy in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in Korea.

After the war, Armstrong finished his degree from Purdue and later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He became a test pilot with what evolved into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft from gliders to jets.

Armstrong was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962 ? the first, including Glenn, was chosen in 1959 ? and commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966. After the first space docking, he brought the capsule back in an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean when a wildly firing thruster kicked it out of orbit.

Armstrong was backup commander for the historic Apollo 8 mission at Christmastime in 1968. In that flight, Commander Frank Borman, and Jim Lovell and Bill Anders circled the moon 10 times, and paving the way for the lunar landing seven months later.

Aldrin said he and Armstrong were not prone to free exchanges of sentiment.

"But there was that moment on the moon, a brief moment, in which we sort of looked at each other and slapped each other on the shoulder ... and said, 'We made it. Good show,' or something like that," Aldrin said.

An estimated 600 million people ? a fifth of the world's population ? watched and listened to the landing, the largest audience for any single event in history.

Parents huddled with their children in front of the family television, mesmerized by what they were witnessing. Farmers abandoned their nightly milking duties, and motorists pulled off the highway and checked into motels just to see the moonwalk.

Television-less campers in California ran to their cars to catch the word on the radio. Boy Scouts at a camp in Michigan watched on a generator-powered television supplied by a parent.

Afterward, people walked out of their homes and gazed at the moon, in awe of what they had just seen. Others peeked through telescopes in hopes of spotting the astronauts.

In Wapakoneta, media and souvenir frenzy was swirling around the home of Armstrong's parents.

"You couldn't see the house for the news media," recalled John Zwez, former manager of the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum. "People were pulling grass out of their front yard."

Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were given ticker tape parades in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and later made a 22-nation world tour. A homecoming in Wapakoneta drew 50,000 people to the city of 9,000.

In 1970, Armstrong was appointed deputy associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA but left the following year to teach aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

He remained there until 1979 and during that time bought a 310-acre farm near Lebanon, where he raised cattle and corn. He stayed out of public view, accepting few requests for interviews or speeches.

"He didn't give interviews, but he wasn't a strange person or hard to talk to," said Ron Huston, a colleague at the University of Cincinnati. "He just didn't like being a novelty."

Those who knew him said he enjoyed golfing with friends, was active in the local YMCA and frequently ate lunch at the same restaurant in Lebanon.

In 2000, when he agreed to announce the top 20 engineering achievements of the 20th century as voted by the National Academy of Engineering, Armstrong said there was one disappointment relating to his moonwalk.

"I can honestly say ? and it's a big surprise to me ? that I have never had a dream about being on the moon," he said.

From 1982 to 1992, Armstrong was chairman of Charlottesville, Va.-based Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc., a company that supplies computer information management systems for business aircraft.

He then became chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in Indian Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. He had two adult sons from a previous marriage.

At the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on Saturday, visitors held a minute of silence in memory of Armstrong. His family's statement made a simple request for anyone else who wanted to remember him:

"Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Home Improvement Remodeling | Vision Foster Homes

Article by Sears Home Pro

What to add and what not to add is the question every home owner seeking improvement will ask. Home improvement involves the reorganization and upgrading of the indoor and outdoor environment.

For a lot of home owners, the landscaping is really important. Landscaping influences the mood or aura of your home, a home with a pool and a fountain translates to a tranquil and serene environment. Moreover, a garden that is well kept with beautiful landscaping could be an attraction to homebuyers when and if you do eventually decide to put your home on the market.

Home improvements are a great investment in your house and you get a more comfortable and beautiful home in the process. There are two main methods of home improvement; you could choose to do a complete overhaul of your home or just do a remodeling project.

Home improvement remodeling is much less expensive than a complete overhaul and could be anything from changing your kitchen floors to changing the heating system in your home.

The kitchen is one of the more popular improvement remodeling projects. The areas for remodeling in a kitchen are vast and there is always something extra you could do to enhance the look of your kitchen and add more value to the home as a whole. Some kitchen improvement remodeling projects could be as complex as placing an island in a kitchen that had none before or could be simply refacing existing cabinets.

The bathroom is another area that is the focus of home improvement remodeling. There is just so much that can be done in a bathroom. You could simply change the tiles and there are many tiles to choose from including ceramic tiles or you could change the whole look of the bathroom; add an oriental or eastern feel to your bathroom.

You could also decide on an addition to your existing home such as a patio. You might want to change the look of our present patio or add a patio where one did not previously exist. Concrete slabs are quite common even though tiles of different materials are gradually gaining popularity.

Whatever form of home improvement remodeling you eventually decide to engage in, it is realy important to make sure that you are making the most of your money. This should be done by ensuring that the materials you are using are of the highest quality, to avoid your having to replace materials soon after the project is done. Furthermore, working with a qualified and reputable home improvement company is imperative to make certain that you are getting value for your money.

Home improvement means that you are adding value to your home, which translates as a prudent investment. You get the added advantage of living in a beautiful environment that affords you maximum comfort.

Innovation Speakers Shed New Light On Old Problems

The Value of Talks

For years now, there has been no shortage of self-help gurus and motivational speakers offering to change one?s life, feel more confident and the like. Because of this, many people have developed a somewhat cynical view of professional speakers. However, well-trained and inspirational innovation and leadership speakers do exist, and when used correctly they can greatly increase your company?s productivity. The hallmark of a good speaker is to be able to change the opinions of everyone in the room and inspire them to care about subjects in which they were previously not interested.

When employees have been working the same job in the same company for months and years, it is typical for them to lose some of the motivation that may have been the inspiration for them joining up in the first place. This decline in motivation often leads to a similar decline in productivity and creativity. Creativity is vitally important since it is what drives real improvement in your company?s performance. Any way you can find to inspire, it is therefore desirable. Great innovation speakers can often bring out the best in people and return them to the fervor they felt when they first started working for you.
