RIM's BB10 devices are slated to launch Jan. 30, and the folks running the show are super stoked -- but, is anyone else? In a nutshell, no, not exactly. (Seriously, we have the iPhone 5 and a bagillion different Android-based smartphones to pick from now. And then there's the fact that RIM has been dangling BB10 in our faces for what feels like forever now.)
But that hasn't so much as put a dent in CEO Thorsten Heins' confidence that the newest BlackBerry smartphones will be a surefire hit. Or, maybe he's just more of the mentality that there's nowhere but up from here. Because let's face it, BlackBerry has been in a massive rut for a while now. Things for RIM have been so bad that, according to The New York Times,?even Heins himself told employees, developers and customers that things can't actually get "much worse."
Heins believes part of BB10's appeal will be the convenience it offers users. Part of that simplicity is actually rather complex, in that the software will take information from frequently used apps and put it all into one tidy package. It's an entirely different concept than what popular operating systems currently provide (namely Google's Android and Apple's iOS), which involves several clicks when switching from app to app. And let's be real, clicking the home button to access a different app is so much extra work, it's exhausting.?
And then there's RIM's messaging center, which has typically been a part of BlackBerry's appeal in the past. But now it's supposedly super slick and heavily social. The messaging tool now functions in a way that allows you to view your Facebook updates, LinkedIn messages, Twitter feeds, e-mails and text messages all in one place. Heins thinks this feature will make the average user fall head over heels in hardcore mobile-love with BB10. Then again, iPhone and Android both have third-party apps that offer similar social luxuries.
Still, if RIM has any hope left for BlackBerry, this is it. Let us know what you think. Will BB10 be as big of a success as Heins says?
