How Not to Speak Finnish by Jim Thompson | International Crime ...

I?ve posted a pronunciation guide of some Finnish names, words and phrases to be found in my Inspector Vaara series, on my website, courtesy of she of the lovely voice, Maritta Hakola. I?m frequently asked how long it took me to learn to speak Finnish. The answer: I?m still learning and always will be.

I have a minor in Finnish from the University of Helsinki, but learned the language in nightclubs, in which I worked, for the first several years I lived here. That learning method caused all sorts of problems. I learned like a child, one word at a time, matriced English grammar on top of Finnish language, often was uncertain whether a word was Finnish or Swedish, the list is long, and it led to all sorts of bad habits, I?ve un-learned most of them, but never managed to get many of them out of my speech. Still, my Finnish is functional and gets me through the day. Additionally, there are so many dialects of Finnish that although many cite ?book? Finnish as correct, I don?t believe there is a right or wrong way to speak the language. Word order isn?t particularly important. It?s even acceptable to create words. To me, if people manage to carry on a conversation, their Finnish is fine, but I?m writing this in the hopes that, if you?re trying to learn the language, I can make it a little easier for you.

It?s often said, although I know of no measure by which such a thing could be quantified, that Finnish is the world?s second most difficult language, behind Mandarin Chinese. In contradiction, it?s also said that the rules of the language are 100% consistent, and is always pronounced exactly as spelled, so that if approached methodically, Finnish is an easy language to learn. I take exception to this. When studying at the university and on occasion asked an instructor why a word didn?t bend according to the rules, her answer was ?just because.? A simple truth. There are some differences in spelling and pronunciation, largely loan words. And even if this claimed consistency were true, learning the rules seems futile when there are about 100,000 of them (an exaggeration, but thousands, far too many for my tiny brain to absorb). In the end, I found that the key was to not worry about the rules or to ask questions, but to approach the language with simple acceptance. With seventeen noun cases and six verb conjugations, which many times render the root word unrecognizable, it works better for me to memorize than theorize.

So-called ?book Finnish??proper written Finnish?is taught at the university, and a great deal more emphasis is placed on writing than speaking (despite two years of study, my written Finnish remains abysmal). This is problematic. Properly written Finnish is nearly a separate dialect from colloquial spoken Finnish in its other many dialectic forms. Foreign students often earn degrees in Finnish language, believing it will make them fluent, and this sometimes leads to disappointment. They graduate, discover that they can write and even translate Finnish, but can?t hold a conversation. I co-authored a textbook, Steps Into English 3 (part a series of I think four books), meant to teach English to Finnish adult learners. It?s earned surprisingly good royalties over the years and so must be popular with teachers in the classroom. So I hope that gives me some credibility with you as proof that I have a clue what I?m talking about. I?m writing this from memory, no resources, so if you find a mistake, feel free to correct me in ?comments?, for the further edification of readers.

As an English speaker?and this essay is largely geared toward English speakers who face the same problems I did and do?there are concepts difficult to grasp. To name some major ones: no articles; no gender marker; no future tense; rather than hyphenating words, they?re simply strung together, sometimes to make a word upwards of twenty letters long; no accenting of syllables, so the language is spoken in a monotone; some sounds don?t exist in English and are similar, e.g., recognizing the difference between Y (a vowel in Finnish) and ? was difficult for me; when letters are doubled in a word, they?re both pronounced. AA?pretend you?re at the doctor, ?let me here you say aaaa;? consonants, like TT and KK can?t be elongated an a vowel can, so the result is a sort of snapping emphasis and full stop (you need a language tape or Finnish friend to grasp it).

The language has many hard sounds, and this, along with the combination of the noted difficulties, may make the beginner feel that they?re only hearing akkkakkakkakkakkaa, and are unable to differentiate where one word ends and the next begins. Most of the above obstacles disappear, with exposure, over time, even the overwhelming length of words. You just get used to it.

When I reached the point that I could get through my day in Finnish, people still often looked at me like I had three heads, as my accent screamed foreigner. I hated drawing that attention to myself. Finnish and English not only don?t translate well, but Finnish spoken with an English accent is grating, truly a butchery and hard to listen to. I learned how to cure this problem in one day, through a lecture at the university on how the sounds produced in Finnish are physically made, as compared to the way sounds are produced in English. Once I practiced and learned these physical skills, although my accent remains soft compared to a natural born Finn, I lost two of my three heads and stopped attracting attention when I spoke. I?ll share some of those tips.

English is a nasal language. When speaking Finnish, don?t let air come up through your nasal passage. It?s that nasal twang that grates. The New England accent?think Robert F. Kennedy as an extreme example, can reach up to 4000 HZ. In Finnish, it hurts. A Finnish male voice can sink to as low 40 HZ, so low that the voice begins breaking up like a radio that needs better tuning to a station. If I speak only Finnish for a few weeks on end, my voice will get lower and lower and eventually will do that. Incidentally, I?ve always been fascinated because Finns, especially women, can continue speaking while inhaling without pause. I haven?t a clue how it?s done.

Finnish is spoken from a different part of the throat than English. Put three fingers on your throat and start talking. Move the top finger to where you feel the main vibration as you produce sound. Continue speaking and force the vibration lower, until sound is generated from where your lowest finger rests. Lower if possible. Voila! You may have reduced your tone by an octave, your grating on the ears of others is over. It sounds difficult, but after you get the hang of it, speaking in this way requires much less effort and is more comfortable than your higher pitched English accent. You?ll draw far less attention and go back to having one head instead of three in public.

Aspiration. I still sometimes have trouble with this. Don?t do it. When you make, for instance, a P sound, don?t let air pass beyond your lips. The combination of all I?ve mentioned will likely, for a time, make you feel as if you?re holding your breath while trying to talk. It will come to feel natural over time.

The: the TH sound. It?s made by touching the front of your tongue to your front teeth and pushing air out. You no longer need this sound, and remember, you shouldn?t aspirate anyway. Make a similar sound required in Finnish by putting your tongue to the back of your front teeth. The result is more DA or TA sound. You may find you feel like you?re faking a Brooklyn accent and it make stick in your English speech as well. That?s just the way it goes.

And lastly, the all-important rolling of Rs. Touch your tongue to the top front of your upper palate. Force air through that point until you?re able to make a low-pitched trill. You may want to do this in privacy to avoid feeling silly. A few Finns have a speech impediment that won?t allow it, so they use the same tactic, but with the back of the tongue against the back of the palate, in effect, rolling Ks. I even met a guy who had, through lifelong practice, managed to eliminate all words with the letter R from his speech. But, it?s really not that hard to roll an R. You?ll find a way.

And here endeth the lesson for the day. Go forth and jabber Finnish!

Fujitsu Lifebook LH532

Among budget-priced laptops, there's a good rule of thumb to always bear in mind: Appearances can be deceiving. Case in point: the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 mainstream laptop looks great on the shelf, with a sleek-looking design covered in stickers that highlight features like USB 3.0 and Wireless Display. But despite a roster of appealing features, it came up short, with sputtering performance and a short-lived battery.

Design
The Lifebook LH532 has a glossy-black plastic chassis, and with blue LED indicator lights, a glowing blue power button, a black matte rubber soft-touch finish across the lid, and Fujitsu's infinity snake logo in polished chrome. Weighing 4.5 pounds and measuring 1.41 by 13.19 by 9.45 inches (HWD), the Lifebook LH532 is roughly the same size as the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars).

The 14-inch Lifebook has comfortable soft-touch panels on the plamrest and a spill-resistant keyboard. It's not light enough to use on the go every day, but for those times you may need to work through lunch?or take your work with you to lunch?you can rest assured that it will survive your occasional slops and spills. The soft touch finish of the palmrest also covers the trackpad, which has a raised pattern of dots to indicate the touch surface. It works well enough, and the right and left mouse buttons are soft and rubbery, making them both comfortable and quiet.

The 14-inch display has 1,366-by-768 resolution, which is par for the course, letting you enjoy movies in 720p or tile windows side-by-side for multitasking. Generic stereo speakers may not produce spectacular sound, but when tested with streaming audio (Queen's "Princes of the Universe") the sound quality was clear at all but the highest volumes, though it was too quiet at low volume.

Features
While the Lifebook LH532 has all of the standard features you might expect, like an SD card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, microphone and headphone jacks, and VGA and HDMI outputs for connecting an external monitor or HDTV, Fujitsu has also added plenty of unexpected premium features as well, like three USB 3.0 ports (one with charging capability), a DVD+-RW drive with dual-layer read and write support and Bluetooth connectivity. For those who don't want to hassle with an HDMI cord, the Lifebook LH532 is also outfitted with Wireless Display 2 (WiDi 2.0), which transmits HD video and audio wirelessly, through an adapter, like the Belkin ScreenCast ?or the Netgear Push2TV ($99 list).

The 750GB 5,400rpm hard drive found in the Lifebook LH532 is one of the largest in the category?the Dell Inspiron 14z and the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 ($649.99 list, 4 stars) both offer 640GB?and Fujitsu doesn't clutter it up with a bunch of bloatware, including only a 30-day trial of Norton Internet Security Software, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a Google toolbar. Fujitsu covers the Lifebook LH532 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 The Lifebook LH532 is equipped with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i3-2350M dual-core processor and 4GB of RAM, similar to the 2.2GHz Intel Core i3-2330M CPU seen in both the HP Pavilion dm4-2165dx ($649.99 list, 3.5 stars) and Sony VAIO VPC-EH25FM ($599.99 list, 3.5 stars). With a faster CPU, the Lifebook LH532 beat out both in Cinebench processor speed tests?2.17 points as opposed to the HP dm4 (2.02) and the Sony VPC-EH25FM (2.11)?but without providing the same performance. In PCMark 7 performance tests, the Lifebook LH532 scored 1,802 points, falling behind both the HP dm4 (1,940) and the Sony VPC-EH25FM (1,865), not to mention the Core i5-equipped category leaders, like the Dell Inspiron 14z (2,308).

Fujitsu Lifebook LH532

The difference in performance was even more pronounced in media tasks. In Handbrake, the Lifebook LH532 took 2 minutes 45 seconds to convert our test video from one format to another. By comparison, the similarly-equipped HP Pavilion dm4-2165dx ?completed it in 2:22, while similarly priced Core i5 systems, like the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 (1:57), completed the same test in under 2 minutes. In Photoshop CS5 the performance dropped from middling to lousy, taking 12 minutes 16 seconds to grind through a test completed in 5:22 by the slowest competitor, the HP dm4-2165dx. As expected in a system with middling performance and integrated graphics, gaming is limited to the most basic games.

The Lifebook LH532 also came up short in battery tests. It lasted only 5 hours 1 minute in MobileMark 2007, which is reasonable given the laptop's 48Wh battery, but similarly priced competitors pack larger batteries and longer life, such as the 55Wh battery in the HP dm4-2165dx (7:58) or the 65Wh battery found in the Dell Inspiron 14z (8:38).

The slow performance and short battery life of the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 were disappointing, given the promise of compelling features like a spill-resistant keyboard, USB 3.0, and WiDi streaming. Unfortunately, all the clever features and design in the world can't compensate for poor performance, and the Fujitsu Lifebook LH532 falls short of competitors with similar price tags and specifications. While the $750 price tag of the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z may be a bit more than the budget-minded shopper wants to pay, alternatives closer in price to the Lifebook LH532, like the Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830T-6841 and the Sony VAIO VPC-EH25FM ?provide superior performance, longer battery life, and better value for your dollar.

Sandusky defense under way, sex abuse trial rapidly winding down

(Note: explicit sexual content)

BELLEFONTE, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - Lawyers for Jerry Sandusky kicked off their side of the high-profile sex abuse trial with testimony from two former assistant football coaches who told jurors it was not unusual for grown men to shower with boys in the Penn State locker rooms.

Richard Anderson, who served on the school's coaching staff over two different periods for more than 20 years before retiring at the end of last season, told the jury on Monday he had witnessed Sandusky in the Pennsylvania State University showers with children, but never saw anything inappropriate.

He testified that he, too, would shower with children.

Sandusky, 68, the former defensive coordinator for Pennsylvania State University's successful football program, faces more than 50 counts of abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, allegations that focused U.S. national attention on the issue of child sexual abuse and rocked the college sports world.

Judge John Cleland said on Monday the jury would be sequestered during deliberations and he expected closing arguments in the fast-paced trial to take place on Thursday.

Over several days of testimony, prosecutors sought to show Sandusky is a serial sexual predator who targeted boys through the Second Mile charity he founded in 1977 for underprivileged children. If convicted on all counts, Sandusky faces a sentence of more than 500 years in prison.

Accounts from the witnesses, now aged 18 to 28, of being victimized as young boys by a much older man, including oral sex and shared showers, at times brought them and jurors to tears.

The case prompted the firing last year of the university's president, Graham Spanier, and head football coach Joe Paterno, record-holder for most wins by a major U.S. college football coach. Paterno died of lung cancer in January at age 85.

Sandusky's lawyers, in kicking off their case, called on Anderson and another former coach, Booker Brooks, to offer a more favorable assessment of the defendant's character.

Brooks, the other assistant, told jurors he has also showered with younger children at many points in his life, and said it would be common practice at places like a local YMCA. He said he considers Sandusky "a great guy."

Sandusky's lawyers took the lead in the trial after days of often emotional testimony by alleged victims of abuse. Earlier Monday, the final prosecution witness testified that her son, who has told jurors he was raped, was often missing his underwear when he returned from visits with Sandusky.

She said Sandusky would often give the boy gifts such as sneakers and athletic clothing. "I wish he would have just given him some underwear to replace the underwear I could never find in his laundry," she said.

JUDGE DECLINES TO DROP CHARGES

In her testimony on Monday, the accuser's mother said she never asked what happened to her son, now age 18 and known as Victim 9 in court papers, and still does not know because she knew it would be tough for him to tell her.

She said her son would stay over at Sandusky's house two or three weekends a month for the majority of the year and Sandusky would directly ask him if he wanted to come over, without speaking with his mother first.

When she noticed her son was missing his underwear when he returned from the trips, the boy would tell her he had an accident and threw them out.

Her son told jurors in testimony last week that Sandusky had raped him and forced him to perform oral sex.

Sandusky's defense had hoped to have a number of the charges against their client thrown out before they began calling their witnesses.

Among other arguments, the defense said charges relating to two alleged victims, identified in court papers as Victims 2 and 8, should be dismissed because no evidence has been entered that would prove their ages when they would have been molested.

The judge, however, rejected the motions.

The defense has previously said it could call dozens of witnesses, including Sandusky's wife Dottie and other family members, as well as Paterno's widow Sue and son Jay.

Lead defense attorney Joe Amendola has argued that the accusers are out for money and in cross examination last week asked them whether they had hired attorneys to pursue civil action against his client.

Amendola has said Sandusky might have acted inappropriately but is not a molester. He has also said Sandusky will testify.

One of the defense witnesses called on Monday, political campaign strategist David Pasquinelli, testified he had worked with Sandusky on a $7 million fundraising campaign for the Second Mile from October 2007 to spring 2009.

The two had almost daily contact with each other and made 15 to 20 trips by car together throughout Pennsylvania as part of the campaign, he said.

Asked by Amendola to characterize the interaction he saw between Sandusky and children, he said: "I saw a lot of goofing around. Jerry had a very unique way, and many of us were inspired by this, to relate to youth" on several levels.

He called Sandusky "a local hero."

Study improves understanding of surface molecules in controlling size of gold nanoparticles

Study improves understanding of surface molecules in controlling size of gold nanoparticles

Monday, June 18, 2012

North Carolina State University researchers have shown that the "bulkiness" of molecules commonly used in the creation of gold nanoparticles actually dictates the size of the nanoparticles ? with larger so-called ligands resulting in smaller nanoparticles. The research team also found that each type of ligand produces nanoparticles in a particular array of discrete sizes.

"This work advances our understanding of nanoparticle formation, and gives us a new tool for controlling the size and characteristics of gold nanoparticles," says Dr. Joseph Tracy, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the research. Gold nanoparticles are used in industrial chemical processes, as well as medical and electronics applications.

When creating gold nanoparticles, scientists often use organic molecules called ligands to facilitate the process. The ligands effectively bring gold atoms together in a solution to create the nanoparticles. In the process, ligands essentially line up side by side and surround the nanoparticles in all three dimensions.

The researchers wanted to see whether the bulkiness of the ligands affected nanoparticle size, and opted to assess three types of thiol ligands ? a family of ligands commonly used to synthesize gold nanoparticles. Specifically, the molecules bound to the gold nanoparticles are linear hexanethiolate (-SC6), cyclohexanethiolate (-SCy) and 1-adamantanethiolate (-SAd). Each of these ligands has a bulkier configuration than the last.

For example, picture each ligand as a slice of pie, with a gold atom attached to the pointed end. -SC6 looks like a very narrow slice of pie. -SCy is slightly larger, and -SAd is the largest of the three ? with the "crust" end of the pie wedge far wider than the pointed end.

The researchers found that the bulkiness of the ligands determined the size of the nanoparticles. Because fewer -SAd and -SCy ligands can line up next to each other in three dimensions, fewer gold atoms are brought together in the core. Therefore, the nanoparticles are smaller. -SC6, the least bulky of the thiolates, can create the largest nanoparticles.

"While we've shown that this is an effective means of controlling size in gold nanoparticles, we think it may have implications for other materials as well," says Peter Krommenhoek, a Ph.D. student at NC State and lead author of the paper. "That's something we're exploring."

But the researchers made another interesting finding as well.

When particularly small nanoparticles form, they tend to form at very specific sizes, called discrete sizes. For instance, some types of nanoparticles may consist of 25 or 28 atoms ? but never 26 or 27 atoms.

In this study, the researchers found that the bulkiness of the ligands also changed the discrete sizes of the nanoparticles. "This is interesting, in part, because each discrete size represents a different number of gold atoms and ligands," Tracy says, "which could influence the nanoparticle's chemical behavior. That question has yet to be addressed."

###

The paper, "Bulky Adamantanethiolate and Cyclohexanethiolate Ligands Favor Smaller Gold Nanoparticles with Altered Discrete Sizes," is published online in ACS Nano.

Rangers rough up Lincecum, win 5-0

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:19 p.m. ET June 10, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A near-perfect day for the Texas Rangers pitching staff ended the same way so many others have this season: in the training room.

Alexi Ogando pitched three perfect innings before leaving with a strained groin after a bunt single, combining with three relievers on a three-hitter to lead Texas past the San Francisco Giants 5-0 on Sunday.

The Rangers also shut out San Francisco for the first time this season in a 5-0 win Friday.

"Seemed like everything we tried to do," Texas manager Ron Washington said, "worked for us."

Well, almost everything.

Robbie Ross (6-0) allowed only a double to pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff in the sixth while working four innings. Mike Adams gave up two hits in a scoreless eighth and Joe Nathan tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.

The AL West-leading Rangers tagged Tim Lincecum (2-7) for all their runs and finished a 4-6 road trip. Even still, the Bay Area finale left its mark.

Ogando, who made his first start of the season filling in for injured Derek Holland, could be the latest Texas starter headed for the disabled list.

"Right now it feels pretty bad," said Ogando, scheduled to have an MRI exam Monday back in Texas. "I feel bad because of the situation we're in but that's something that happens in baseball."

Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler each drove in two runs to chase Lincecum after 5 2-3 innings in the fifth straight loss for San Francisco's shaggy-haired ace. He allowed nine hits, struck out five and walked four.

The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has been erratic all season.

Sunday was no different.

Lincecum labored through a 30-pitch first inning - walking three straight with two outs - before striking out the side in the second on a rare warm, windless day at San Francisco's waterfront ballpark. In the third, Elvis Andrus tripled and scored on Adrian Beltre's two-out double to give Texas a 1-0 lead.

Everything really unraveled for the Giants in the fourth.

Three straight singles by the Rangers loaded the bases, the last coming on a bunt by Ogando that trickled between Lincecum and third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Ogando limped off the field after the play, leaving with a right groin strain after throwing 39 pitches.

Kinsler hit a two-run double to left to put the Rangers ahead 3-0. Lincecum got Beltre to pop out to right with the bases loaded, but he never settled into a rhythm.

Hamilton hit another two-run double in the sixth to extend Texas' lead to 5-0 and send Lincecum into another four days of misery. The lanky right-hander is winless in eight straight starts.

Lincecum, who pitched the Game 5 World Series clincher for the Giants at Texas in 2010 and also helped beat the Rangers earlier in that Series, has a 6.00 ERA this season.

"I was just looking to come in and compete against a very good team, try to right what I've been doing wrong the last 10 starts," Lincecum said. "I didn't do that. Executing my pitches is the biggest problem. I had a good second inning and I wanted to carry that over but nothing was smooth."

This time, the stars on the mound belonged to the Rangers.

Not until Huff's pinch-hit double off Ross with one out in the sixth did the Giants even get a hit. Gregor Blanco followed with a grounder to the pitcher, Huff was tagged out in a rundown heading for third and Beltre's throw nabbed Blanco leaning too far off first for a double play.

Angel Pagan and Nate Schierholtz singled off Adams in the eighth. Then Kinsler snagged a grounder by Brandon Crawford at second and flipped it back-handed to Andrus out of his glove to start another dramatic double play.

The biggest relief for Texas, though, came on the mound.

Washington was hoping for about 60 pitches from Ogando, who took the turn in the rotation for Holland after the left-hander landed on the disabled list Thursday with a fatigued throwing shoulder. He also had a stomach virus that caused him to lose about 15 pounds.

Ogando, who has made 27 relief appearances this season, was in line to make at least one more start. He will head back to the bullpen when Holland and Roy Oswalt - who is scheduled to throw about 80 pitches for Double-A Frisco on Tuesday - are healthy enough to rejoin the rotation.

The bullpen bonanza came two days after six Seattle relievers combined to no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"I wanted Ogando to keep going to possibly get that, which was sweet," Ross said. "Then I get in there and after the first inning I'm like, `Oh, dang, we have a no-hitter going.' After that, I kind of forgot. That's part of it."

NOTES: Giants LF Melky Cabrera missed his third straight game with a strained right hamstring. He took batting practice before the game and manager Bruce Bochy remains hopeful Cabrera will return for Tuesday's game against Houston. ... Washington rested Nelson Cruz and Michael Young. Cruz left Saturday's game in the eighth because of a sore right Achilles, which he attributed to his shoes. Cruz expects to play when Texas opens a six-game homestand against Arizona on Tuesday.

Martin leads Yanks to Subway sweep of Mets

NEW YORK (AP) ? Russell Martin and the homer-happy New York Yankees appeared a little out of practice when it came to celebrating a game-winning homer.

Martin led off the ninth with his second homer of the game and the New York Yankees took advantage of some shoddy infield defense to beat the Mets 5-4 Sunday for a three-game sweep.

The catcher rounded third as a sold out Yankee Stadium roared and jogged toward his joyous teammates waiting at the plate. He took a big hop and fell as he landed on the plate and grabbed his leg, putting a momentary stop to the bouncing party.

"I tried to jump in the air to celebrate, and I got about 2 inches off the ground," Martin said. "But I still managed to touch home plate and it feels good."

Martin's fall might've given his teammates a sudden reminder of what happened to Kendrys Morales. The Los Angeles Angels star broke his leg hopping on home plate during a walk-off win in May 2010 and missed almost two seasons.

"I worried, yes," manager Joe Girardi said. "I saw him go down a little bit, but someone pulled him up and he walked quickly, so my worries went away."

The homer on a full-count pitch off Jon Rauch (3-6) was the Yankees' first walk-off homer since Sept. 8, 2010.

The Yankees took advantage of errors by David Wright and Omar Quintanilla to rally from a 3-0 deficit and take a 4-3 lead in the eighth on a single by Alex Rodriguez.

But Rafael Soriano blew his first save since he started finishing games when Mariano Rivera was lost to season-ending knee injury.

Soriano gave up a tying double in the ninth to slumping Mets first baseman Ike Davis, a defensive replacement in the eighth. He got some help keeping it tied 4-all from shortstop Jayson Nix, who threw to third to get the lead runner on a grounder by Quintanilla.

"Any play he makes that's a heads-up play doesn't surprise me," Girardi said, "because he's been around the game and understands what he needs to do."

Boone Logan (1-0) got two outs with runners on first and third for the win. The Yankees are 7-2 in June.

The Yankees hit eight long balls in their first Subway Series sweep of the Mets in the Bronx since 2003 ? that series included a fourth, makeup game that was played at Shea Stadium as part of a two-stadium doubleheader. It was their first win in their last at-bat against the Mets since June 12, 2009, when Luis Castillo dropped Rodriguez's potential game-ending popup, allowing two runs to score.

The Mets took a 3-0 lead against Andy Pettitte in the second inning with help from second baseman Robinson Cano's fielding error and Jonathon Niese pitched repeatedly out of trouble for much of the day to make it stand up for seven innings.

"Definitely a tough one, the way Jon Niese threw the ball," Wright said.

Pettitte gave the Yankees a scare in the sixth when he snared Scott Hairston's comebacker with his bare hand and threw him out. Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue raced out to the mound and after several minutes of deliberation and a few practice pitches, Pettitte remained.

He retired the side in order then was greeted by a pat on the shoulder by Derek Jeter at the dugout.

His left hand bandaged heavily, Pettitte said he'll be able to make his next start, which is scheduled to come after he turns 40 on June 15. X-rays of the hand were negative.

"He's got an extra day here. So he should be OK," Girardi said.

Girardi said Hiroki Kuroda will make his next scheduled start after he was hit on the foot by a sharp grounder Friday night.

Trailing 3-0, in the seventh, Martin hit a two-run drive off the top of the wall in right field after Wright's throwing error extended the seventh inning. Many of the 49, 010 ? the third straight sellout ? paused to wait and see if the leaping Hairston caught the ball.

"That was hard to take," Hairston said. "Guess a lot of those things happen in this ballpark."

Martin, who was hitting .173 entering play May 25 has four homers in his past six games and 10 RBIs. He's raised his average to .216.

"I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable at the plate," Martin said. "I made a couple of adjustments and, hopefully, I'll just keep doing what I've been doing now."

Jeter led off the eighth with a slow hopper that went under Qunitanilla's glove and rolled into the outfield. Jeter was given a single and he hustled into second base with a headfirst dive on the error.

Curtis Granderson then hit his second opposite field single of the game to left, off Bobby Parnell, to put runners on first and third. Mark Teixeira followed with a tying hit a day after he gave the Yankees the lead with a two-run homer.

The Mets scored more than three runs against the Yankees for the first time in 11 games and for the first time in their past five games this season, but have lost six of seven overall.

Making his 51st interleague start, matching Livan Hernandez for most all time, Pettitte raced through the top of the Mets order with only seven pitches in the first. He then needed 36 pitches in the second as the Mets scored three runs. He gave up three runs ? two earned ? and struck out eight in six innings.

The Yankees put the leadoff batter on against Niese five times in seven innings but came up empty until the seventh. The Yankees hit into three double plays to help quash threats.

Given an extra day of rest after leaving his most recent start with an accelerated heart rate, Niese appeared to get out of seventh inning when Andruw Jones hit a grounder to Wright. Wright spun and made the throw into the dirt.

Martin followed with his homer. His home run in the ninth was the third walk-off homer of his career.

NOTES: The Yankees reinstated pitcher Freddy Garcia from the bereavement list and sent Ryota Igarashi to Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre. ... Jeter has grounded into 11 double plays this season. He had 10 all last year. ... Rodriguez moved past Eddie Murray for seventh on the career RBIs list with 1,918.

Samsung Galaxy S III officially the UK's most popular smartphone, good showing for HTC One line as well

Samsung Galaxy S III

It's been a good news kind of weekend for the Samsung Galaxy S III. Not only have we seen a five-pronged attack about to launch on the US market, but news from the UK puts the Galaxy S III at the top as the UK's most popular smartphone. And it's been on sale less than a week, which puts into perspective just how massive the latest Samsung flagship device is going to be.

All this comes despite it only being widely available in only one color, and one storage size. Nevertheless, the latest results from the uSwitch Mobile Tracker sees Samsung reclaim the top spot from the white iPhone 4S, amid a storm of marketing, pre-orders and eventual sales this last week.

The iPhone finds itself in a full on Samsung sandwich too, with the predecessor to the Galaxy S III, the Galaxy S II still holding strong in third place. The Galaxy S II had been top of the tree in the UK for an incredible 11 consecutive months, before last month finally surrendering to the iPhone. Chances are that the impending arrival of its successor might have had a little something to do with it.

Taking a look further down the list, it's an all out Android onslaught. The HTC One X sits fourth, with the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Note inhabiting positions five and six respectively.

The black iPhone 4S appears way down in seventh position, with the remaining HTC One devices, the One S and One V taking places eight and nine. Rounding out the top 10 is the Sony Xperia S. Interestingly enough given the apparent popularity of BlackBerry smartphones in the UK, especially with the younger crowd -- they really seem to be everywhere you look -- there is no mention of a single RIM handset in the Mobile Tracker's top ten. What it does do is reaffirm what we already know -- the UK loves some Android.

News: FBI Creates NDCAC for Improving Wireless Surveillance ...

1x10_FBI_Building.jpg

FBI Los Angeles branch (via FBI)

?

As if federal agencies like the FBI or Homeland Security didn?t have their noses in our private matters enough, the FBI is announced the formation of yet another ?surveillance? organization. This new group called the National Domestic Communications Assistance Center (NDCAC or DCAC) will be one designated towards ensuring the Feds have access to information passed via Internet, wireless communications and VoIP.

?

?

Little else about this new center was disclosed, but its purpose was outlined. The DCAC will initially focus on VoIP, like Skype, social networks, and wireless communication mediums. They will be in charge for inventing technology that will let police eavesdrop on Internet and wireless communication easier than ever before.

?

?

The FBI hopes for Internet companies to simply comply with their ?security? measures and willingly install backdoors for VoIP communications, social networks, instant messaging and email so the government can sneak in when they deem necessary.

?

?

The DCAC is looking to hire people with experience in PacketCable, QChat, T1.678 VoIP etc. The FBI would also like to improve upon their Computer and Internet Protocol Address Verifier (CIPAV), which is illegal, remotely installed spyware used by the above-the-law FBI to identify child molesters, hackers, hit men, extortionists, terrorists and all other scary evil people that lurk among us.

?

?

This center, based out of Quantico Virginia, will be receiving about 15% of the $54 million budge allocated by congress towards ?lawful electronic surveillance."

?

?

There are some who are raising concerns about the transparency the FBI seems to be avoiding. Jennifer Lynch of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group, said, ?We should know more about the program and what the FBI is doing. Which carriers they?re working with ? which carriers they?re having problems with. They?re doing the best they can to avoid being transparent.? A committee of the House of Representatives has directed the FBI to disclose other agencies involves and what the DCAC has accomplished three months after it becomes effective.

Local real estate tops for economists but causing buyer frustration ...

ENCINITAS- The good news for our local real estate market is that it is continuing to trend in a positive direction and past naysayers are starting to see and? the positive opportunities. I have been reporting on strong buyer competition for the last several months and for the last few years encouraged renters to start buying their own real estate not their landlord?s.

In this Sunday?s Union Tribune Business section, the Economist panel was asked if there was ? a safe and lucrative place to put your savings and investment dollars?? As is the norm, they had? representation on the pro and con sides, but even two of economists who felt there really wasn?t a true safe place, stated:

?Real estate is a possibility for those who can afford to invest in that area as prices are still off their highs and interest rates are at record lows.? Alan Gin, USD

?? if you need a place to live, buying a home now can be a good investment.?- Lynn Reaser- Point Loma Nazarene Univ.

What did the Pro?s? have to say?

?? activity levels are mounting and Realtors are reporting multiple bids offers amid declining inventory?- Gary London, The London Group

??.modestly priced housing or multifamily property is looking pretty attractive?? Norm Miller, USD

?San Diego real estate is also relatively cheap now, so owning your home is also likely to be a good investment.?- Dan Seiver,? SDSU

Reviewing the monthly listings for the last quarter we see that they are tapering off slightly while at the same time the percentage of homes going off the market in the first 30 days is increasing. This is causing considerable buyer frustration and this is another reason why it is important to work with an agent that understands the current market and can provide solid knowledgeable counsel.

Additionally, looking at the recent past, the supply and demand equation has been shifting and the? market really is strengthening for those equity sellers who have been considering selling. There are equity sellers who do not have enough equity to qualify for a refi at the historically low interest rates but they do have enough equity to sale their current home and have money left over to? put down at the very least the minimum required by FHA and are saving hundreds each month on their new home purchase.

For most of these seller, they bought at a higher purchase price and have rates around the 5.25-5.5%. On a $400,000 loan this would be a payment of approximately $2200.00 a month.

Purchasing now, the $400,000 could buy more home or a better location and at today?s rates, the payment on the same loan amount would be approximately $1900.00 a month.
